The Picture of Dorian Gray
by Oscar Wilde

Book Reviewed by Lyza

"The Picture of Dorian Gray is written by Oscar Wilde and takes place in England during the 19th century and follows a young, beautiful, and innocent Dorian Gray as he descends into corruption and evil sparked by his introduction to Lord Henry, a cynical man who insists that beauty and youth are the most important things in life. This philosophy drives Dorian to become obsessed with remaining youthful and beautiful regardless of the consequences that follow. This descent into sin and corruption is reflected in the portrait done of Dorian by Basil Hayward, a man who had once admired Dorian Gray's innocence so dearly he painted the very portrait that would come to symbolize Dorian's obsession with his past self as he spiraled farther into delinquency. Oscar Wilde's writing is descriptive and beautiful and he weaves his novel with intense imagery and figurative language that emphasizes the experiences of Dorian and expands on the themes of obsession and innocence v. sin that are followed throughout the novel. Additionally the queer subtext in this novel makes it unique for the time period and adds another layer to the meaning of the story and the role that sin plays as well as making Oscar Wilde's decision to publish and write the novel brave and defiant only making the book more intriguing. I really enjoyed this book and found it a fairly easy classic novel to read as a majority of it felt like reading a modern book which made it easier to enjoy the story and writing!"

She is capable of inducing amnesia in people, and when that is discovered, a woman breaks her out of the camp to use her powers for nefarious purposes. She runs away and joins a group of other kids that have a goal: to make it to a camp where it is said that many people like them exist. The stakes developed by the author in this tale are very intriguing, and it leaves you wondering about the world that these characters inhabit, and there are many parallels to the world we live in today. "Imagine you're headed down to the coast for your last spring break, and then, bam, you and your friends' RV tires get shot out in the middle of nowhere. Duh, duh, duhhhh. Well, that is exactly what happens to Redford "Red" Kenny and her five friends as they are headed for Gulf Shores for Senior Spring break. Red is stuck on a 31-foot RV with her best friend, Maddy; Maddy's brother and so-called leader, Oliver; Oliver's girlfriend, Reyna; and classmates Arthur and Simon, with no service for eight hours in the SC countryside as they deal with the stress and secrets a mysterious sniper wants them to reveal. This book was super good and super suspenseful. The first like 1/3 is just kinda introductions, but once their tires get shot out, I was on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next. Holly Jackson primarily writes in 3rd person, which isn't my favorite, but for her, I'll make an exception, even if Red's internal dialogue screams ADHD. Good length, took me about three days to read. It is a little hard to keep up with six characters' information, but I also think that with that many main characters, not all of them get the spotlight. tw: death, loss of parent, blood. It is in 3rd person, and I feel that Red's thoughts are a little jumbled, as if she had ADHD, so it is a little tough to follow her train of thought. Read Holly Jackson's other books, they are all great!"

What does this book remind you of? "It definitely reminded me of other young adult mysteries, but I got a little bit of a Law & Order vibe, and one of the characters reminded me of Rafe Cameron from the Netflix show Outer Banks. Also, with all the characters, it gave off a One of Us is Lying feel by Karen M. McManus."

"Tuesdays with Morrie is a really emotional and powerful book by Mitch Albom. It’s about Mitch, a guy who visits his old college professor, Morrie, every Tuesday after finding out he’s very sick. The whole story mostly takes place at Morrie’s house, where they talk about important stuff like life, love, family, and what really matters. Morrie is super wise and always has something deep to say, even though he’s not feeling well. I thought the book was really good, but it was kind of sad. It made me think about how I spend my time and what’s actually important in life. The writing was easy to follow, and it didn’t feel boring at all. I liked how real their conversations were, like I was actually sitting in the room with them. The book was not too long, which was nice, and it kept me interested the whole time. Some parts were really exciting and made me feel like I was there with him. Other parts were sad because he had to deal with losing friends and problems at home. The book was kind of long, but it was easy to read because Chris wrote like he was just telling his story. I liked that it showed both the good and bad parts of being a soldier.
