Thank you to all of the 277 people who came through this room donating and finding treasures this weekend! And thank you to the Homeless Society of the Bow Valley for all your help again! Our community swaps recently caught the attention of Le café show, a part of CBC's French Radio, Ici Radio-Canada Première, who reached out to us for an interview! Earth Talks: Climate Engineering with Dr. David Keith “Climate engineering: Restorative ecology or another step towards a dystopian techno future?” with Dr. David Keith was another fantastic and thought-provoking Earth Talk presentation! Fireside Chats with Local Authors Michael Kerr, Stephen Legault & Geoff Powter We'd like to send our sincere thanks to local authors Michael Kerr, Geoff Powter and Stephen Legault, along with moderator Nikki Tate, for a truly wonderful evening at Fireside Chats with Local Authors on April 30th! We'd also like to send out a big thank you to everyone in attendance for coming out and supporting this event. Based on the positive feedback we received afterwards, it sounds like you found this presentation just as enriching as we did!
Some of our favourite comments from the evening include: - Very informative and engaging; well done so keep it up.
- Many thanks for such an interesting & enjoyable evening with an impressive lineup. So enjoyable!
- Good subject, diverse personalities, great venue and community spirit.
- The interviewer was great - excellent questions. The authors were enormously interesting and lively in the presentation. I enjoyed every minute of this interesting evening.
- Well done, Nikki did a great job as a moderator. I was wondering how 3 such different approaches to writing different books could be part of the same discussion. I feel I heard from each author; very engaging evening.
Many thanks to Save-On Foods in Canmore for generously supplying the snacks for this event. We'll be hosting another Fireside Chat with Local Authors in the fall, stay tuned for more details in the future! Kanopy is a video streaming service created exclusively for libraries that offers unlimited access to a wide and wonderful selection of films including classics, world cinema, independent features, and documentaries. As a movie lover (on a budget), I have found Kanopy to be a great alternative to similar fee-based services and have discovered many great titles: Lucky directed by John Carroll Lynch Kanopy is easy to use and can be accessed on all kinds of devices: desktops, laptops, tablets, and smart phones. And, new films are added every month. -Submitted by CPL staff member Carey.

![](https://www.libraryaware.com/794/Files/Display/db50c2b3-5f35-4bfd-af48-461ea50ab5d0?) We are thrilled to introduce Anya and Emma, our 2024 Summer Programmers! Anya is returning for another summer at the Library, and this will be Emma's first time running the Summer Reading Game. They've been hard at work organizing this year's game, and we can't wait to see what they have in store! Keep an eye out in our July newsletter for all the details! Name: Anya and Emma Where are you from? A: The UK originally, but I’ve called Canmore home since 2011. These days, I split my time between home and UBC Okanagan in Kelowna, BC. E: I’ve lived in Canmore since I was 2! What do you do at the Library? A: I’m one of the Summer Reading Program staff members, so I help plan, prepare and run any programming related to the Summer Reading Game. E: I’m working as a Summer Reading Programmer. You'll be working at the Canmore Library all summer long, what are you most excited about in this role? A: I think we have some pretty awesome programs lined up to run this summer – we’ve kept some favourites from last year, reinvented some others, and have some fresh surprise activities that we can’t wait to introduce! E: I love theming, making crafts, working with kiddos of all ages, and incorporating drama and storytelling into my work. So far, I’m also really enjoying just being at the library every day! Can you give us an insider secret about what to expect from this year's Summer Reading Game? A: There’ll be plenty of adventures to go on this summer for all ages, from stories to D&D. We’re excited to try some new things in our programming this year while keeping the same game rules you know and love, so our programs will be perfect for those looking to make a splash (and everyone else, too!) E: A little bit of non-fiction, a little bit of fantasy, and a lot of over-the-top underwater fun! What are your goals and aspirations for when you finish school? A: I’m currently studying anthropology with the intention of getting into the disability advocacy space, either through academic research or policy work. As a young disabled woman myself, I’m hopeful that I’ll be able to contribute to a more accessible and understanding society. E: My ultimate goal is to spend my life writing as much as I possibly can. I would love to write children’s books, YA, and write for the stage! I also love performing, and I would be really happy if I could work in children’s entertainment for some of my life as well. What is something that you are proud of about yourself? A: I’m always curious and I really love to learn. E: My creativity and open-mindedness. If you could have one super power, what would it be? A: I think being able to shape water (excuse my Dungeons and Dragons background here) would be super cool. And, who knows, maybe that would be a useful power to have this summer? E: I’d love to be able to teleport. Driving is scary! If you could travel to any fictional world from a book, where would you go? A: A friend convinced me to read the Percy Jackson series last summer, and I think Camp Half-Blood would be fun. E: I wouldn’t want to stay in either place for very long – but I’d love to spend a day in Neverland or Wonderland. Your Staff Pick: A: I’m currently enjoying Lonely Castle in the Mirror by MizukiTsujimura – it’s a fantasy dimension-hopping style book about living with social anxiety, bullying, and navigating the challenges of growing up.

About Climate Engineering: Caitlin Miller from the Town of Canmore will be joining us to talk about all things disaster preparedness. Attendees will learn: - How the Town of Canmore prepares for disasters
- How a changing climate affects the way municipalities prepare for disasters
- What actions attendees can take to be prepared for disasters
After their presentation, Caitlin will lead a discussion with attendees covering things like personal emergency plans, what you might do if you need to evacuate when you don't have your vehicle with you, what supplies you might need to bring with you during an evacuation, and more. About the Presenter: Caitlin Miller is the Director of Emergency Management for the Town of Canmore. Having grown up in Canmore, Caitlin sees the effects of a changing climate and is keen to help her community be prepared in the face of new or increasingly frequent hazards. Caitlin incorporates the climate emergency into her municipal emergency management planning and believes that the quickly changing climate is making it challenging for local communities to adequately prepare for the impact of natural hazards. Caitlin has a Masters of Public Safety from Wilfrid Laurier University and a passion for lifelong learning.

Fun fact: this book was written by Powter right here in the Canmore Library! Barry Blanchard will be discussing the second volume of his book "The Calling: A Life Rocked by Mountains." This is the story of the culture of climbing in the days of punk rock, spurred on by the rhythm of adrenaline and the arrogance of youth. It is also a portrait of the power of the mountains to lift us physically, emotionally and intellectually. This author event will take place on Tuesday, June 18th from 6:30 - 8:00pm in the Friends Program Room. The authors will have books on hand to sell and sign at this event.
