September 2020 Books & Beyond

Wow. September 1st. It's hard to believe we're at the end of the summer - and what a weird summer it's been for us here at the Library! Normally the Library truly comes alive in the summer, patrons buzzing about, kids and adults alike collecting their reading challenge ballots and excitedly deciding which draw to enter, magic shows, movie days, craft days, budding Jr. Librarians helping out our summer students and so much more. While we missed all this activity, keeping our patrons and staff safe was and still is our number one priority. This meant turning to online offerings for our summer programming and we are so thankful to everyone who participated and checked in with us online each week. The Library community and spirit was very much felt every time we saw a smiling face on the other side of the screen. A big thank you to everyone who helped make our summer programs a success! As we move into Fall, even though we are partially open, online programs will continue. We have a new lineup of exciting offerings that you will find below! As is everyone, we are unsure of what is going to happen in the coming weeks, as students return to school and life continues forward, but one thing that is certain is that we are here for you! Whether you need books to support distance learning with your child, access to the internet, help finding a great new book to read, or just to see a familiar face - we're happy to help in any way we can. If you haven't visited the Library since our doors reopened in July, a full break down of the changes made and new policies in place during this first phase of our reopening can be found on our website here.

Staff Name: Lyndsey Allen Where are you from? I was born and raised in Nova Scotia, however I have lived in Canmore for about 10 years now. I traded the ocean for the mountains and consider both 'home' at this point. How long have you been at the Library? I have been working at the library for just over two years now, but it feels a little like I've always been there - in the best way! Books are my happy place <3 . What do you do at the Library? My main role at the library these days is that of a children's programmer. What that looks like has evolved since COVID, but I run multiple storytimes (online versions as of late), film and edit videos for our Youtube channel, as well as helping run a number of other online children's programs. I ran the Half Day Friday program and visited local daycare centers weekly for storytimes prior to COVID and I can't wait until it's safe for those to resume! I also work behind the scenes on things like creating and scheduling social media posts, working on our website and creating PR images. What is the best part of your job? Reading books to kids and seeing their little faces light up is easily the best part of my job, but I truly love all aspects of working at the library. Talking books with patrons, helping them find the perfect book, shelf-reading, getting a first look at all the new books... the list goes on and on! What is your favorite food? ALL the food. I love to cook and bake and there isn't much I don't like. Oddly enough, considering I'm an east coaster, one thing I do NOT like seafood. Yuck! Lyndsey's Staff Pick: The Sun Down Motel by Simone St. James (Canadian author alert!) - an addictive mystery meets ghost story that is full of eerie atmosphere and suspense.

Miss seeing your favourite library staff? Come to our drop in Virtual Reference Desk! Every week, join one (sometimes two) of our library staff as we answer YOUR questions on Zoom. Drop in any time during the hour. You can stay and chat or leave after finding your answer - the choice is yours! Our cameras will be on, but your camera is optional. We will be able to screen share so you can see the resources we are using to find your answer. Feel free to ask for demonstrations as we go along! But what types of questions can you ask? Consider... - "How do I borrow a book from Libby?"
- "Do you have any suggestions for a good mystery novel?"
- "Where is the registry office in Canmore?"
- "Which eResources have digital magazines?"
- "Does the library have any books on tigers? I'm writing a report for school."
- "What's the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?
And the list goes on! If we cannot provide an answer right away, we will get back to you. If you have a question specific to your library account or personal device, please contact the library directly. Our Virtual Reference Desk will be open Wednesday's from 2:00-3:00pm via Zoom starting September 16th. You can find all the details on our website here.

Via Zoom, our next meeting will be held on Tuesday September 22nd from 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. September's book is The Bear by Andrew Krivak - available now on Hoopla as an eBook or eAudiobook. "In an Edenic future, a girl and her father live close to the land in the shadow of a lone mountain. They possess a few remnants of civilization: some books, a pane of glass, a set of flint and steel, a comb. The father teaches the girl how to fish and hunt, the secrets of the seasons and the stars. He is preparing her for an adulthood in harmony with nature, for they are the last of humankind. But when the girl finds herself alone in an unknown landscape, it is a bear that will lead her back home through a vast wilderness that offers the greatest lessons of all, if she can only learn to listen."
