There is nothing like the holidays to bring back poignant memories. Those wanting to explore their memories have the opportunity to do so by attending The Memory Box: Creating a Memory Legacy with published author and national and international presenter, Virginia Taft. Taft named the workshop after a box her mother kept on her dresser for more than forty years until she died at the age of ninety. To honor her mother, Taft fulfill a promise she made to her. What began as a road trip to revisit places and memories from the past became a journey of self discovery. More than a memoir or travelogue, The Memory Box, also evolved as an opportunity to help others share, explore and create their own memory legacies. Participants will hear about Taft’s Memory Box journey and be inspired through writing exercise to explore their own memories. The hour-long session is free. No registration is needed with the exception of Pinehurst; please call 208-682-3483 to reserve your spot. The sessions will be held: - Saturday, Jan. 4, 1 pm, at Post Falls
- Thursday, Jan. 9, 2 pm, at Rathdrum
- Thursday, Jan. 16, 4 pm, at Athol
- Tuesday, Jan. 28, noon, at Pinehurst

The Community Library Network is working with partners to deliver literacy backpacks to four-year-old children. Once unpacked, kids will find cool materials to help them get ready for kindergarten. Each backpack will contain literacy and STEM activities, a resource calendar, library card application and community opportunities. Named Launch into Reading, the program gives families an introduction to these learning resources from a trusted source, their community librarian. Karen Yother, youth services coordinator for the Library Network, said said the backpack will be distributed to every 4-year old who comes to a community event or attends a program in their neighborhood via the Library Network’s Pop-Up Library outreach program. “We’ve just started pop-up libraries,” said Yother. “These are programs at apartment complexes, in parks, and targeted community locations, such as food distribution sites.” Partners include United Way, Opening Books, Opening Doors, the Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls School Districts, and Mountain States Early Head Start. The project is sponsored by the Idaho Commission for Libraries, the Friends of the Community Library Network, the Friends of Post Falls Library, and the United Way of North Idaho.

Community Library Network staff members have been busy, with six out of ten residents holding cards. Last year, 1.3 million items circulated, and more than a half million people walked through the doors of the seven library buildings and bookmobile. From January to November 2019, more than 92,500 people attended programs for children, teens, and adults. Not surprising to staff, e-books and audio-books downloads increased by 27 percent from last year to almost 100,000. Remodel projects were completed in Athol, Rathdrum, Spirit Lake and Harrison. This year, updates in Pinehurst and Post Falls will be completed and planning for the Hayden remodel will begin.
