American Sign Language Family Camp at Hayden Library
Hayden Library is set to offer a Family Camp for those who are deaf or hard of hearing or may know someone who is. The American Sign Language (ASL) two-day workshop will be held on Friday, August 2, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturday, August 3, from 9 a.m. to noon. Both days will include lunch. The camp is free, thanks to sponsorship by the Friends of the Community Library, and registration is required. Designed for kids and adults, the focus of the camp is to make folks aware of the resources available to the deaf and hard-of-hearing community, said Tim Madsen, youth services specialist. “We want to empower these kids and let their families realize their children can achieve whatever they want to do,” Madsen said. Children, ages 3 to 18, will begin each day with a bi-lingual story time and then work on an art project, followed by STEM activities tied to career interests. Adults will hear from experts in the ASL fields. They will share success stories and talk about local advocacy support organizations and ASL learning opportunities. Register for the workshop at CommunityLibrary.Net/Kids ( under the Hayden heading) or call the Hayden Library, 208-772-5612 x 120. Spirit Lake, Harrison Libraries Under Construction
Members of the Spirit Lake Library know things are the on-the-move and have been since mid-July. The Community Library Network is framing a new staff workroom to better handle the process of checking in and shelving returned material. The addition will also provide a space for picking up reserved books and a self-checkout terminal. In addition, a computer bar, with seating for four people, will be installed at the east window. Other changes include shifting the collection, requiring the library to close on Saturday, August 17. Children’s books will be located in the rear of the building along with a librarian’s desk, and the adult non-fiction collection will be moved to the front. The construction cost is about $12,000. After the Spirit Lake project is completed, facility maintenance staff will begin work on the Harrison Library. Windows will be installed overlooking the lake, and the staff workroom will be reconfigured for efficiency. The library will be closed to shift the childrens and adult sections either Wednesday August 14 or 21. A Pinehurst Library project is slated to begin in September. Write to Publish with Kim Morgan
Author Kim Morgan will teach a free, four-week series on writing at the Hayden Library. The programs will be offered Wednesdays, August 7, 14, 21, and 28, from 6 to 8:00 p.m. Each week focuses on a different aspect of writing designed to strengthen your storytelling skills. Write-to-publish the 90-day ebook, August 7 This is a short, intensive how-to session to refine any high-concept, reboot your creative process, and sprint to the finish line. Believe you can and you will publish a Kindle edition ebook in 90 days. The Storyteller’s Camera, August 14 Filmmakers use visual storytelling that can be adapted to creative writing. What event or moment gets your story rolling? Who is the narrator? How close do you want the reader to get to the heat of a burning house or inside the bedroom? As writers, we can learn how to create stunning scenes with the camera angle. Magic in the Art of Storytelling, August 21 The best writers make pictures with words, but what happens to magic in a world gone digital? The master storyteller combines narrative skills with the fictive-dream. This class takes a closer look at how magical thinking inspires a sense of wonder in your audience. Still Writing: the 60-second challenge, August 28 Beyond methods and craft, your writing improves through instinct, discipline, risk-taking, and tenacity. Resilience in writing is a conscious act. Come away from this class with the 60-second challenge to keep you writing. Find other programs for Adults at CommunityLibrary.Net/Adults. Pictured left: Kim Morgan
