Submitted by Jill I recently read “Rebecca” by Daphne du Maurier. It was an immediate bestseller when it was published in 1938, and was made into an Oscar-winning film by Alfred Hitchcock. Du Maurier’s writing is superb! Rebecca is about a young woman who marries a wealthy older man named Maxim de Winter and soon they are on their way to his beautiful mansion called Manderley. Maxim's first wife Rebecca, had drowned in a cove near Manderley the previous year, and right away the sinister housekeeper Mrs. Danvers intimidates and frightens the new Mrs. de Winter and drives her half mad with jealousy and fear. She is soon convinced that Maxim regrets his decision to marry her and is still deeply in love with the seemingly perfect Rebecca. Rebecca is a psychological thriller - the plot thickens and turns and twists and keeps you wondering till the very end. I am still thinking about the characters two months after finishing. I see why it is a classic and is considered by some as the novel of the century.
