Libraries have always been about life-long learning, increasing a member’s access to information, and connecting with our communities. The original concept was lending books, then making newspapers and magazines available. Since then, databases, audio books, ebooks, and downloadable music and magazines have been added. All of these items fit into the traditional model of literacy. But in today’s world, people also need to know how to be literate in technology. Robotics, 3D printing, and virtual reality are making their way into the workforce and, just as books used to be prohibitively expensive to own, today’s technology is out of reach for many. In the upcoming months, the Library Network will offer access to new pieces of technology, and the skills to use them. Nick Madsen, emerging technology librarian, is spearheading the effort. “A fantastic future of opportunity and development is racing toward us. Artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and desktop manufacturing may seem like science fiction, but it is right here, right now,” Madsen said. Pictured left: Nick Madsen

Weather predictions include rain, snow, and cold temperatures—a typical North Idaho winter. If the season seems to be stretching into infinity, then take advantage of your library’s programs for adults to get out of the house and chase the winter blues away. Here’s a brief listing of what’s coming up in February. All programs, including supplies, are free. Pinehurst Library Just because you can’t garden outside doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy fresh greens. Learn how to grow an indoor garden, Monday, February 4, 6 p.m. Reservations are required, call 208-682-3483 or stop by the library to sign up. Post Falls Library Join us for a very un-Valentine’s Day event, Saturday, February 9, noon to 4 pm. Create un-Valentine Day cards, decorate cookies, play games, compete in Minute To Win It challenges, and more—all while deliberately ignoring the season's romantic undertones. Rathdrum Library Don’t miss your chance to craft spring-inspired wreaths with willow branches, flowers, and lots of creativity at the Rathdrum Library, Saturday, February 9, 1 p.m. Registration required. Call 208-687-1029 or stop by the library to sign up. Hayden Library Stop by the library Tuesday, February 12, 6 p.m. for games, table topics, music, pizza, laughter and more. It’s our version of speed-friending in a casual atmosphere! You’ll have the opportunity to meet like-minded people in their 20s and 30s. Athol Library Sign up and make your own shrinky dink earrings, Wednesday, February 27, 4 to 5:30 pm. Make a pair of earrings and a matching necklace along with a box to put them in. Reservations required, call 208-683-2979 or stop by to sign up.

Documents, photos, and emails can be printed from your smart phone or tablet through the free PrinterOn App available from an app store.
