Gizmo-CDA, Library Network Partner to Offer Coding for Tots
Toddlers learning “if, then” statements. Preschoolers programming robots. Families learning to code together. That is precisely what the Community Library Network and Gizmo plan to do next week to celebrate a Week of Code d’Alene. Youth Services Specialist Mandi Harris said there are well-researched ways to teach young children the screen-free fundamentals of coding and programming. "We can use play-based experiences to help children reason, think critically, and problem solve,” she said. Studies have found that children as young as eight months old discern statistical patterns. Activities planned for the Coding for Tots sessions include story time and screen-free, hands-on activities. “We’ll read, sing, play games, dance, and play with a variety of robots to learn fundamental concepts behind coding,” Harris said. Families will also learn about free library resources to continue to learn coding at home. Sessions are scheduled at the following libraries: - Rathdrum: Monday, December 3 at 10:30 am
- Hayden: Tuesday, December 4 at 2 pm
- Spirit Lake: Wednesday, December 5 at 3 pm
- Post Falls: Thursday, December 6 at 3:30 pm

Deadline Approaching for 2018 Tax Deductions
Those looking for a good place to a make monetary charitable contribution should look no further than their favorite Community Library Network library. Dollars must be given before Monday, December 31, to receive tax savings for 2018. Individuals may claim 50 percent of the amount contributed, up to $250 on a $500 contribution listed on an individual’s return or up to $500 on a $1000 contribution on a joint return. The tax deduction process is simple too, because charitable contributions are entered on your tax return. Corporations are also eligible for Idaho tax savings and may find contributing to the Community Library Network Foundation a better fit. In addition, taxpayers are allowed to claim federal and Idaho itemized deductions. For specific information, check with an accountant or the Idaho State Tax Commission. The Library Network has projects planned for each of our locations. And while the District’s budget covers operations and maintenance, monetary donations are used to go beyond the basics or to move a project up on the schedule. For more information, contact Director John Hartung, 208-773-1506 x 315 or Communications Director Anne Abrams, 208-773-1506 x 323.
