The Short of It: ZZ Packer

The short story -- short in length, but full of content! Join our discussion group, which focuses on the short story. This month we'll read ZZ Packer’s stories, "Drinking Coffee Elsewhere," "Brownies," and "Our Lady of Peace." Copies of the stories are available at the Hopewell Branch Reference Desk. Registration is not required.

Transcribe-a-thon
Friday, February 13, 12:00 – 3:00 pm
Celebrate the birthday of Frederick Douglass by helping make history accessible. Drop in with your laptop to transcribe historical documents related to Black history and culture, contributing to projects such as The Colored Conventions Project. You can also stop by to watch the DouglassDay.org livestream featuring inspirational speeches and songs. Light refreshments will be served. Registration is requested at events.mcl.org.
Blood Pressure and Glucose Screenings
Tuesday, February 24, 12:30 – 1:30 pm
Stop in for a free blood sugar and blood pressure screening provided by the Hopewell Township Health Department. Registration is not required.

Tuesdays, February 3, 10, 17 & 24, 11:30 am
Cooperative games are a great way to learn and have fun! Come play games that are perfect for preschoolers, in partnership with Titusville Tabletop Games. Recommended for ages 3-5. This is a drop-in program. Registration is not required.
Free Play with mTiny Robots
Wednesday, February 18, 4:00 pm
mTinyRobots are a simple, easy, and safe way for children to learn basic coding! Program adorable panda robots to race, dance, sing, and more in this interactive STEAM-based program. Recommended for ages 5-11. Registration is required.
Environmental Research & Volunteering Workshop for Teens 
Saturday, February 21, 3:00 pm
Interested in the environment and sustainability? Want to learn how to be more involved? In this workshop, students will learn how to conduct environmental research and find out how to volunteer for sustainability initiatives in their community. Led by teen volunteer and member of Green Teen Force, Aritra Ray. Recommended for grades 6-12.

Tax Help at the Library
Several MCLS branches are hosting free tax preparation from AARP Tax-Aide. Use the AARP Tax-Aide Locator to schedule an appointment. Search by your city or zip code to find available times at a location near you. If no appointments appear available, check back—cancellations open new slots regularly.
TrashedArt Contest
The TrashedArt Contest is back! Remake, reuse and renew the items you would recycle or throw in the trash into something unique and beautiful and rethink the usefulness of garbage. The contest celebrates Earth Day by encouraging patrons to turn ordinary trash into extraordinary art. Submit your artwork to the Lawrence Headquarters Branch between February 24th - March 3rd.
