The Representative Town Meeting passed a budget that will level fund the library for fiscal year 2018. The good news is that the library will remain open for another year. The bad news, for the entire town as well as the library, is that the town’s underlying budget issue has not changed. North Attleborough is a full service community, offering a K though 12 school system, public safety, and a fairly wide range of services, including a small but well-loved zoo! Since the “great recession” the pressure to sustain all of these areas of local government has been growing almost every year. It will be up to everyone in the town to decide what kind of town they want to live in, what kind of schools they want for their children, and whether the town will remain a desirable place to settle in and raise a family. The time for that decision has been kicked down the road for another year, but it cannot be delayed forever.

Clean Off Your Shelves and Donate to the Sept. Book Sale
|
|
We are accepting donations of gently used, saleable items including books, paperbacks, dvds, cds, puzzles and children's books throughout the summer. Drop them off during the hours we are open. The book sale is the major fundraiser for the Friends of the Library.

This year's Summer Reading theme is "Build a Better World," so there is going to be a "whole lot of building going on" beginning June 28th here at the library. We are planning to build a bridge from one side of the Children's Room to the other with puzzle blocks. If you read five books, you get to put your name on a puzzle block and help with that bridge. If you read twenty books, you'll add four blocks and get to choose a book to keep and get a certificate. Keep reading, it will take many blocks to build the bridge! We'll be building some great memories and having fun all summer. Check out our program schedule. *indicates registration required. - Thurs.7/6, 10 am: Storytime, 2-6 yrs

This summer for our Summer Book Discussions participants will choose a Pulitzer Prize Winner (for July) and a National Book Award Winner (for August). We will meet on July 11 and August 8 at 1:30 for a pot luck lunch when we will share our books (and, we hope, get ideas for new books to read.) To join the group contact Maggie (mholmes@sailsinc.org) and get on our email list. Greg Maichack's Pastel Class is full, but we do have a few spaces on the waiting list. This free class, provided to us by the North Attleboro Cultural Council, is being held on Monday, July 17, at 5:30 pm.
July's Poetry, Short Prose and Acoustic Music Open Mike will be held at the library on Sunday, July 30, at 1:30 pm. Come in to listen to poetry and music and enjoy the air-conditioning. We are looking for more musicians as one of our popular members has moved away.

OverDrive, the interface that SAILS and RML uses to circulate e-books and e-audiobooks, has been popular. Starting this month, patrons will be able to borrow books that individual libraries have purchased. This means that you will have access to more titles. (Not the Hoopla titles, though. Those use a different system.) Our library will be buying more electronic titles this year. Which authors would you like us to purchase? Which genres? What format? Drop us a line (illna@sailsinc.org) or give us a list when you come to the library.
