Message from the Director

The budget season is underway for the town government of North Attleborough. Department heads have been asked to submit budgets that are level-funded from this year. That will still allow the library to petition the state for a waiver from its budget formula for FY 2019. But the Library Commissioners have changed the waiver process. After next year, the waiver petition must be accompanied by a five year plan, drawn up by the town’s administration that outlines how the town will restore full funding to the library. If, at the end of the five year plan, the library doesn’t meet the state’s mandate, then the library will be decertified. That would mean the end of state aid for the library, but worse, it would mean that the library will be decertified and will become a stand-alone collection. Residents will no longer have access to items beyond this library’s walls. I’ll keep you posted on any developments, but this doesn’t look great.

New Improved "History" on Your Account
If you have activated the "Charge History" on your SAILS account, you will be pleased to know that you can now sort by author in the Enterprise catalog. This will help you see what you have read by a particular author so you can order the next book in the series or his newest title. It's usually easier to remember the author than the title of a book! Go to the Checkouts tab in My Accounts, click on Checkout History at the foot of your checkout list. Then you can click on Author to sort by author.

Did You Get a New Phone, Tablet or Computer?
The SAILS system offers a large selection of ebooks and e-audio books that can be read or listened to on many different gadgets, including eReaders. The new OverDrive app, Libby, is easy to use if you haven't downloaded books before. Go to RMLonline.org and click on eBooks to go to the site. Then click on Help to find out all you need to know. We can help you in the library as well. Even if you like regular books better, ebooks are convenient for vacations or long trips.

The Movie Discussion Group will have its first meeting on Monday, January 8, at 7 pm. Participants should watch Blade Runner (the original 1982 version) before coming. Copies are available at the Reference Desk. Ted Reinstein will be back on Thursday, January 18, at 6:30 pm for a talk based on his new book, General Stores. Long before “Cheers,” the general store was the vital and inviting heart of a community, where everyone not only knew your name, but how you took that coffee, how many kids you had, and how’s your dad doing, anyway? And in tough times, it was a place that often treated customers like family, extending credit when no one else would. The general store was real-life Norman Rockwell—deeply woven into America’s cultural identity, an integral part of the nation’s self-portrait from its earliest days. Fact is, the general store is still very much here, and very much in business. What’s more, like the diner, it has seen a resurgence. In some places, it is even being reimagined for a new era. Registration is required. Make Your Own Porg: Thursday, Jan. 25, at 7 pm. Join Marjorie in making a sock "Porg" (from the Star Wars movie.) For Adults and children over ten (with an adult.) Please bring your own scissors. Registration required. Poetry, Short Prose and Acoustic Music Open Mike will be held January 28, at 1:30 pm. We are looking for new people to present. You can read poetry you like, try out telling some jokes, share a reminiscence, or sing a song. Snacks are provided by the Friends of the Library. The Annual Book Pot Luck will be on February 3, at 11:30 pm. We share the titles of books we've enjoyed, share our pot luck lunch, and then get to choose books to take with us. Give Maggie your book recommendations by January 18 so she can order copies.
