Historical Fiction. In the summer of 1913, Montana teacher-in-training Cora Diehl happily comes home on break to her mother and father's small farm -- but her world quickly changes when her beloved father suffers a stroke. While he survives, he needs lots of help, and, within days, wealthy Montana copper king Wallace Kensington shows up. It seems he knows Cora's parents quite well and has an offer that's too good to refuse -- he'll provide the best care for Cora's dear papa if she will join Kensington and his privileged children on a grand tour of Europe (where she just might fall in love). This 1st in a new series by veteran author Lisa Bergren will please fans of strong-willed, faith-filled heroines navigating a confusing world and searching for their place in it.

Amish Fiction. Sadie King is in rumspringa, the time when Amish adolescents have more freedom, so she's wearing jeans, using her beautiful singing voice to belt out non-Amish songs, and going to clubs to perform with a band. Though she's an orphan, she loves her siblings and the Amish way of life -- but she also wants to use her musical talents to their full extent, something she can't do much of in church (no solos there). To add to her confusion about her future, she falls in love with an Englisher. Continuing the story of the King family that began in A Simple Winter, this 2nd book in the Seasons of Lancaster Novels might please fans of Beverly Lewis, Cindy Woodsmall, and Wanda E. Brunstetter.

Crime Novel. Three Portland friends with crime in common -- Cassidy covers it for Channel Four, Nicole investigates it for the FBI, and Allison prosecutes it for the federal government -- jokingly call themselves the Triple Threat Club. What criminal would want to wrangle with this trio? You'll have to read to find out, but one most certainly does; though they've appeared in three books together, by page 20, one of them is ruthlessly murdered(!). With their friend gone, the remaining women find an unlikely ally in a private investigator named Ophelia as they hunt for the killer. Readers who enjoy mainstream novels like James Patterson's Women's Murder Club books but prefer a Christian tone should check out Fox News legal analyst Lis Wiehl's latest.

Fiction. Moving from Houston to small Round Top, Texas, Brad and Darlene Henderson hope to provide a safe environment for their three children, 17-year-old Chad, 15-year-old Grace, and 12-year-old Ansley. But they face problems ranging from minor (a snake in their rundown house, money is tight) to serious (dangerous behavior by one child, marriage problems). To add to their adjustment pains, Darlene gets a job outside the home for the first time in years. Though author Beth Wiseman is known for her novels about the Amish, this "compelling and worthy read" (Booklist) is her first contemporary novel that doesn't involve them; her fans will still find the writing style they like, but in an edgier book that examines modern families.
If You Like: Beverly Lewis
As she was born in the Amish country of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, it's no surprise that well-known Christian author Beverly Lewis focuses on stories of the "plain people." Setting her tales in rural Pennsylvania and Ohio, she provides realistic dialogue, authentic details, and fascinating insights, and the Amish background gives these novels a timeless feel and an unhurried pace. Addressing very real issues of religious dissent and how to keep oneself from, yet of, the world, Lewis' books are popular with many. Her latest, The Fiddler, was recently published. If you've enjoyed it and are eager to read similar novels, check out the books below.

Amish Fiction. For years, Rebecca Kauffman dreamed of becoming a mother. Suddenly, she was -- but not at all in the way she imagined. After her Englisher sister and brother-in-law die in an accident, Rebecca and her husband, Daniel, suddenly become the parents of two teenagers, rebellious 15-yeard-old Jessica and likeable 14-year-old Lindsay. It's not easy: the girls deal with their grief and a total lifestyle change as they become part of an Old Order Amish community; Daniel faces the consequences when Jessica causes trouble; and Rebecca, dealing with her own loss, is caught in the middle. Beverly Lewis fans will appreciate the recipes, the Lancaster County setting, and the appealing characters in this 1st book in the Kauffman Amish Bakery series.

Amish Fiction. Via clandestine meetings and midnight phone calls, Amish teenagers Carrie Weaver and Solomon Riehl plan to elope even as another young man, Daniel, sets his heart on Carrie. While Carrie and Sol like their community, they believe they love each other -- and Sol certainly loves baseball. In fact, he's been signed to a professional team, the Lancaster Barnstormers. But when tragedy strikes, Carrie must examine her faith -- and her feelings for Sol and Daniel. With its rich details and tension between Amish and English worlds, Suzanne Woods Fisher's The Choice, the 1st in her Lancaster County Secrets series, should hold much appeal for those who enjoy Beverly Lewis' work.

Amish Fiction. Ten years ago, Leah Beiler's former fiancé, Johnny Kile, left his Amish community for the English world. Brokenhearted, Leah threw herself into her work as a schoolteacher. Unmarried and still teaching in her community's one-room schoolhouse, she clings to her faith and the old ways -- but she faces life-changing decisions when she's courted by two very different suitors: Daniel Glick, a widower, father of three, and newcomer to Pleasant Valley, Pennsylvania...and Johnny, now a researcher, who's back in town helping a local doctor study hereditary diseases in the Amish. Readers who enjoy Beverly Lewis' novels should appreciate the warm-hearted characters, the Pennsylvania setting, and the way the English and Amish worlds intersect.

Amish Fiction. Born to a strict father in the traditional Old Order Amish way, 17-year-old Hannah Lapp knows that her love for her neighbor, Mennonite Paul Waddell, will not find favor at home. Despite that, she accepts Paul's proposal of marriage the day before he departs for his last year of college. But as she walks home alone, she experiences a brutal and shattering violation, and Hannah wonders how to handle what has happened to her while she faces losing her place in her community forever. Peopled with authentic characters, this well-researched 1st in a series may not be as homespun as Beverly Lewis' work, but should still please readers interested in faith, family, and community.
