Spy Fiction. Deep in Russia's administration there's a nondescript bureaucrat named Konstantin Malin, who has earned himself a massive and illicit fortune through inroads into Russia's energy industry. British corporate espionage expert Ben Webster has been hired to expose Malin's criminal networks, but he also, shockingly, uncovers evidence that links Malin to the death of a colleague years before. With its complex plots, international intrigues, and elegant writing, this debut is sure to appeal to fans of old-school spy novels by the likes of Len Deighton and John le Carré.
Start Shooting: A Novel - by Charlie Newton

Share Start Shooting%3a A Novel ISBN-13: 9780385534697
ISBN-10: 0385534698
Suspense Fiction. There's a lot going on in this novel -- a large cast of memorable characters, lots of violence, and plenty of subplots. But for readers who like frenetic action on the gritty streets of not-quite-working-class Chicago, this is a sure winner, told in colorful, muscular, detailed prose that brings the tension between black, white, and brown to life. The main story: in 1982, a 13-year-old Irish girl was raped and killed and an African-American gang member executed for the crime. But 29 years later a struggling newspaper accuses Hispanic officer Bobby Vargas (the girl's forbidden childhood friend) and his older brother Ruben, now a decorated detective, of the crime. With Chicago vying for the Olympics and trying to quash any distasteful rumors, Bobby worries that he and Ruben will be thrown under the proverbial bus despite their innocence. It's a dense tale, but not one you'll want to miss.

Thriller. Tom Rob Smith's debut, Child 44, was both an award-winning, bestselling book and the 1st in a trilogy. Agent 6 is the 3rd and final novel in that trilogy, which no doubt has Smith's fans worried. But readers who loved the details of life in the Soviet regime will continue to be fascinated here, as the empire decays and -- in an interesting reflection of U.S. involvement there today -- invades Afghanistan. Spanning decades and continents, this final book finds an exhausted but determined Leo Demidov hunting for answers he's been denied for years. It also offers a conclusion to a stunning story that most readers will reach "with regret and in awe" (Publishers Weekly).
The Innocent: A Vanessa Michael Munroe Novel - by Taylor Stevens

Share The Innocent%3a A Vanessa Michael Munroe Novel ISBN-13: 9780307717122
ISBN-10: 0307717127
Thriller. Vanessa Michael Munroe has a wealth of talents -- able to speak 22 languages and blend in anywhere, she earns a living by passing on information sought by wealthy clients. But she's also haunted by her past, keeps knives strapped to her shins, and leans toward a lethal kind of justice when she feels it's warranted. In her 2nd appearance (after The Informationist), she's on the trail of a 13-year-old girl abducted by a cult that does terrible things in the name of their religion. With another exotic location (Buenos Aires), plenty of action, and a fiercely kick-ass protagonist some will think reminiscent of Lisbeth Salander, this gritty novel might be disquieting, but it's undeniably thrilling as well.
All Necessary Force: A Pike Logan Thriller - by Brad Taylor

Thriller. Pike Logan is the leader of a top-secret counter-terrorism unit called Taskforce. Though it's part of the Special Forces, Logan tends to lead the team outside the bounds of law when he needs to. Now, with traditional methods failing, he's charged with stopping an imminent terrorist attack on the U.S. power grid. He's also taken a student -- a woman -- under his wing, which his all-male colleagues aren't too happy about. But all too soon, on an assignment that was meant to be easy, she's pulling her own weight in dangerous situations. All Necessary Force is the 2nd Pike Logan thriller, following One Rough Man -- and it's "well written, edgy and a damned good yarn," says Kirkus Reviews.
If You Like: Robert Ludlum
Bestselling author Robert Ludlum died in 2001, but part of the legacy he left behind were several series (such as the one starring Jason Bourne) that have continued after his death. Generally fast-paced thrillers with dedicated heroes in life-threatening scenarios, Ludlum and Ludlum-like novels tend to take place all over the world and incorporate a hefty amount of spycraft to boot. The books listed below were written by novelists who, one way or another, have an association with Robert Ludlum, whether they were co-authors (Gayle Lynds), write for Ludlum series (Eric Lustbader, Kyle Mills), or write in a similar style (Jack Higgins).
Rough Justice - by Jack Higgins
Publisher: Berkley Books
Check Library Catalog Pub Date: 07/07/2009
Share Rough Justice ISBN-13: 9780425228630
ISBN-10: 0425228630
Spy Fiction. Robert Ludlum readers looking for more books like his will likely enjoy Jack Higgins, whose strong characters complete their missions, no matter the cost, in espionage novels that focus on military details and the politics of war and victory. In Rough Justice, the 15th Sean Dillon thriller, presidential aide Blake Johnson gets tangled up with Harry Miller, the newest recruit on team Dillon. Death, destruction, and retaliation follow as the Russians try to start a war and the British and the Americans try to prevent one. Because the series has evolved over time, you may be confused by a few names if you've skipped a few books; to start at the beginning, pick up Eye of the Storm. The latest, A Devil Is Waiting, is newly published.
Last Snow - by Eric Lustbader
Publisher: Forge
Check Library Catalog Pub Date: 02/16/2010
Share Last Snow ISBN-13: 9780765325150
ISBN-10: 0765325152
Suspense Fiction. When he's not writing books for Robert Ludlum's Jason Bourne series, bestselling author Eric Lustbader has a healthy career writing his own novels. In this 2nd Jack McClure novel, the presidential strategic adviser is dispatched to Eastern Europe after a U.S. senator dies under mysterious circumstances. But his assignment there is complicated by two unlikely companions -- a rogue Russian agent and the U.S. president's daughter -- and attacks on his own life. With plenty of spycraft and a breakneck pace, this is one that Ludlum fans are sure to enjoy.
The Last Spymaster - by Gayle Lynds
Publisher: St. Martin's Paperbacks
Check Library Catalog Pub Date: 03/06/2007
Share The Last Spymaster ISBN-13: 9780312988777
ISBN-10: 031298877X
Spy Fiction. Even in her own novels, Ludlum co-author Gayle Lynds offers everything a Ludlum fan has come to expect: conspiracies, rogue agents, exotic locales, and deadly secrets. The Last Spymaster even has a likable, innocent, but ultimately resourceful heroine in Agent Elaine Cunningham, who's been assigned to recapture legendary (if treasonous) CIA spymaster Jay Tice. Convicted of Cold War espionage, he's escaped from his maximum-security prison cell. Without giving too much away, it's safe to say that in this chase-and-be-chased tale, no one and nothing is to be trusted -- except for the author's terrific descriptions of the D.C. landscape and rich examples of classic spycraft.
Darkness Falls - by Kyle Mills
Publisher: Vanguard Press
Check Library Catalog Pub Date: 10/22/2007
Share Darkness Falls ISBN-13: 9781593154592
ISBN-10: 1593154593
Suspense Fiction. In Darkness Falls, former FBI agent Mark Beamon makes his 5th desperate attempt to stop disaster; this time, the world's oilfields are in danger of being destroyed by oil-eating bacteria, which would bring the world's economy -- not to mention the transportation of food -- to a grinding halt. Beamon's reluctant ally is Erin Neal, a grief-stricken scientist in self-imposed isolation after his girlfriend's death, who discovers that this dangerous strain of bacteria may have resulted from his own research. Author Kyle Mills, who wrote a well-regarded entry for Ludlum's Covert One series (The Ares Decision), won't disappoint Ludlum fans with this tale of idealism gone so very wrong.
