In this sequel to The Silent Oligarch, British investigator Ben Webster is still working for the boutique London firm of Ikertu, which specializes in corporate investigation. This time, a billionaire Iranian refugee named Darius Qazai seeks his services to prove accusations against him false, as they're hurting his company's bottom line. A line of inquiry soon gets Webster involved in a grim world of blackmail, offshore money, arms dealing, and terrorism. While the plot may have you flipping pages, fascinating and one-of-a-kind characters like Webster's man in Dubai or Qazai's pallid assistant will have you just as eager for more from author Chris Morgan Jones.

Psychological Suspense. The MacBride clan has long lived seemingly untouched by misfortune, at least until matriarch Lydia dies from cancer. It's around then that everything else falls apart -- there are affairs, trouble with the law, too much drinking. And somehow connecting it all are a mysterious confession in Lydia's extensive diaries, long-kept family secrets, and an outsider bent on exacting terrible revenge on the MacBrides, who he has long felt have wronged him. Shifts in perspectives -- and in time -- as well as the disappearance of a baby lend an increasingly urgent air to this third novel by a British author compared to Sophie Hannah, Ruth Rendell, and Morag Joss.

Suspense Fiction. New Jersey police officer Luke Somers has become a public hero since being forced to kill Steven Gallagher, the chief suspect in the murder of a high-profile judge. But Steven's older brother, Chris, a member of an elite military squad, is convinced that Steven was innocent and has kidnapped Luke's brother -- and will kill him, unless Luke proves Steven's innocence in the next seven days. The suspense is palpable and effectively ratcheted up by the ethical issues Luke must confront to save his brother. The engaging tone and humor that author David Rosenfelt is known for in his Andy Carpenter series is evident here as well.

Spy Fiction. Full of the intimate details of a spy mission and the lives of those pulled into it, this isn't the sort of novel that has brash explosions or a straightforward plot. Readers willing to be patient, however, will be rewarded by the painstaking attention to detail in this tale of two men (full of mutual dislike) assigned to covertly spy on and confirm the identity of a man suspected to be responsible for a large percentage of the deaths of coalition forces during the Iraq War. If you're a fan of Graham Greene, Eric Ambler, or John le Carré and haven't yet read anything by Gerald Seymour, do yourself a favor and pick up A Deniable Death.

Publishers Weekly calls this award-winning debut, set in an unnamed country, "engagingly gruesome," and it's hard not to agree with either part of the description. Five severed arms have been discovered lying buried in a circle -- each belongs to a missing girl, each an only child. But a sixth arm discovered nearby belongs to an unknown girl who may still be alive, and who has not been reported missing. Mila Vasquez, an expert on finding missing children, is added to the team headed by criminologist Goran Gavila, and together they must unravel the twisted layers of the crimes committed by an unknown suspect who seems to be manipulating their every move. Fans of Thomas Harris' The Silence of the Lambs will enjoy The Whisperer.

Spy Fiction. After her first assignment goes badly awry, rookie CIA agent Kyra Stryker is assigned to work in the Red Cell, an unconventional department of one (analyst Jonathan Burke is not terribly easy to get along with). Meanwhile, tension with China ratchets up to the point that a global conflict may become inevitable, and the U.S. is caught flat-footed when China invades Taiwan. The only chance to avoid disaster rests in the hands of Red Cell and a longtime undercover agent in China, known only as Pioneer. And there are only hours left to get him out of Chinese territory, discover what he knows, and stop the Chinese threat. Written by a former CIA analyst familiar with the real Red Cell, the details of spycraft are compelling and believable.

Supernatural Thriller. First, a warning: This isn't your standard thriller, blending as it does the fast pacing, conspiracies, and suspense of a thriller and the supernatural elements of a fantasy novel. If you're willing to cross genre boundaries, however, it may very well be worth it. The Rook begins with an unnamed, amnesiac woman regaining consciousness in a London park, battered, bruised, and surrounded by corpses. Worse, she's somehow woken up in the wrong body. Fortunately for our heroine, currently inhabiting the body of one "Myfanwy Thomas," the previous occupant has left her a series of letters informing her that she's a "Rook," a high-level operative of a secret organization that battles supernatural forces, as well as providing instructions on how to survive her new life. And boy will she need them!

Thriller. For soldiers in Afghanistan, there's something worse to fear than IEDs and deadly ambushes, and that's a lethal new bacterium that eats its hosts from the inside out -- and which appears to be reaching a global epidemic as wounded soldiers are shipped home. The only possible cure comes from a deep cavern underground that requires negotiating territory controlled by Mexican drug lords -- and only disgraced scientist Hallie Leland knows enough about it to get the job done. Violence from outside -- and a potential mole within her team -- put Hallie's life in grave danger just as the disease starts to spread. If you're a fan of James Rollins' adventure novels or of medical thrillers, you won't want to miss this debut.
