Thrillers and Suspense July 2007

Some say the world will end in fire, / Some say ice. / From what I've tasted of desire / I hold with those who favor fire. / But if it had to perish twice, / I think I know enough of hate / To say that for destruction ice / Is also great / And would suffice.
~ Robert Frost (1874-1963), American poet

Legal Thriller. Golden retrievers are smart dogs--but as witnesses for the defense they have some shortcomings. After saving Yogi from doggie death row, attorney Andy Carpenter starts in on a new case when Yogi is proven to be Reggie, a dog that disappeared the same night his owner allegedly threw his fiancée off a boat. Andy suspects that someone removed Reggie from the boat--and that this someone might be the one responsible for the murder. Soon this likable lawyer is being harrassed by both the FBI and the mob. If you're looking for a "cracking good yarn," Booklist suggests that you read this 6th entry "as soon as you can."
If You Like James Grippando...
Although there are six entries in James Grippando's Jack Swyteck series of legal thrillers, most of his fast-paced stand-alone thrillers also feature a similarly likeable hero battling contemporary evils in a dangerous-to-near-impossible situation from which he must not only extricate himself, but often others as well. The inclusion of true-to-life and investigative details (often including long-buried secrets) make believable the conspiracies and corruption that Grippando's heroes often confront. If you've already read--or are still waiting for--Grippando's tension-filled latest, Lying with Strangers, you might want to try one of the following authors; their books share some of Grippando's attention-grabbing characteristics.

Thriller. When his FBI Hostage Rescue Team is ambushed during a drug raid, Web London is the sole survivor, largely because he froze (uncharacteristically) before entering the fray. Although he managed to take out the unmanned machine guns that killed his team as well as save a little boy, Web is tormented with guilt, and despite his outstanding service with the FBI, suspicion begins to swell. Soon, the heroic Web seeks counseling as he tries to find out who was behind the ambush. What this all-too-human hero learns in counseling as well as during his investigation combine to create a complicated and gripping storyline.

With his sympathetic characters and taste for conspiracy, Joseph Finder's tense thrillers are a good bet for Grippando fans.

Legal Thriller. The conspiracy in Greg Iles' The Quiet Game goes all the way up to the FBI, but begins with the decades-old unsolved murder of a black man in novelist Penn Cage's hometown of Natchez, Mississippi. Widower Penn has returned home to find that his father is being blackmailed; at the same time, his interest in the old murder stirs racial tensions in an already tense town. The sympathetic Penn must get to the bottom of not only his father's secrets, but those of the town itself, in the process endangering his loved ones. Publishers Weekly says that this "ably crafted, richly atmospheric legal thriller is engrossing," and it should appeal to fans of John Grisham as well as James Grippando.

Adventure/Suspense. There isn't a moment to spare in this tale of sunken nuclear submarines, political treaties, rogue agents, and betrayals galore. Only geologist Philip Mercer (in his 1st appearance) has the wherewithal to connect the dots when a volcano beneath the Pacific Ocean--created by Cold-War-era Soviets--surges upward, carrying a mineral more powerful--and more desirable--than uranium. Known as Vulcan's Forge, its location near Hawaii may be the reason multibillionaire Takahiro Ohnishi is fomenting the islands' Japanese to secede--by force--from the U.S. It's hard to tell just who's controlling who, but finding out brings thrills aplenty.
