Horror October 2006

One need not be a chamber to be haunted;
One need not be a house;
The brain has corridors surpassing
Material place.
~ Emily Dickinson (1830-1886), American Poet

New and Recently Released
Secret Story - by Ramsey Campbell
Publisher: Tor
Pub Date: 05/30/2006 Check library catalog
ISBN: 0765316161
Dudley Smith isn't much of a creative writer; he is, however, quite an imaginative serial killer. Smart guy that he is (he hasn't been caught yet, after all) he writes "fictitious" short stories and a screenplay based on the murders he has actually committed. When he is asked to revise his film script which closely resembles a murder case (the victim's family is threatening to sue), he commits more and more murders with each requested revision. Aspiring writers should find this nominee for the British Fantasy Award for Best Novel especially interesting.

Renfield: Slave of Dracula - by Barbara Hambly
Publisher: Berkley Prime Crime
Pub Date: 09/05/2006 Check library catalog
ISBN: 0425211681
Renfield, of Bram Stoker's Dracula fame, and Dracula himself, are as alive (metaphorically speaking) as ever as books about them flourish (see also Tim Lucas's The Book of Renfield and Elizabeth Kostova's The Historian). But don't skip this one just because you've read the others: Library Journal says "Hambly is a superb storyteller" and Booklist says this is "one of the best recent vampire yarns." Here we learn about Renfield's past--including his wife and young daughter--as he sits in an asylum, but he soon tries to escape when he says he hears his vampire master calling him. Fans of Stoker's original should relish seeing old "friends" in a new book.

The Burning - by Bentley Little
Publisher: Signet
Pub Date: 08/01/2006 Check library catalog
ISBN: 0451219147
All aboard! Earlier this year in Entertainment Weekly Stephen King declared Bentley Little the "best outright horror writer." See if you agree by checking out Little's latest novel. In alternating chapters this book tells the tale of four disparate strangers (a young college student, a single mother, a park ranger, and a cross-country traveler) who are inevitably drawn together at the end of the story. A ghost train, carrying an unimaginable evil, appears to all of them and preys on their darkest fears. Loaded with everything from immigration issues and haunted houses to racism and zombies, this work is one for horror fans who savor more than just a scary story.

Harbingers: A Repairman Jack Novel - by F. Paul Wilson
Publisher: Forge
Pub Date: 09/19/2006 Check library catalog
ISBN: 076531276X
The fix-it man of all fix-it men, Repairman Jack is back solving problems that others can't in this 10th outing. Still recovering from the tragic events of Infernal, Repairman Jack does a favor for a friend and checks into the disappearance of a teenage girl. This seemingly innocent request soon draws him into the middle of a somewhat serious conflict--two supernatural forces are vying for control of all human life on Earth, which includes Jack's pregnant girlfriend. Horror readers who also like crime thrillers should give Repairman Jack a chance.

The Living Blood - by Tananarive Due
Publisher: Pocket Books
Pub Date: 01/01/2002 Check library catalog
ISBN: 0671040847
Everyone wants their child to be gifted, right? Well, there's gifted and then there's gifted. Jessica Jacob-Wolde married David, an Immortal who later gave her a transfusion of his blood while she was pregnant. He disappears and she discovers that not only is her blood special, but their daughter has inherited her father's immortality and psychic gifts. Jessica sets out for Africa to find David's people, the only ones she thinks can help tame her toddler's unsettling powers. While in Africa she uses her blood to help ill children, something the Immortals may not appreciate. Though this is the sequel to My Soul to Keep, Publishers Weekly says it "improves upon the original." This one's especially good for fans of African and African-American themes.

Cerulean Sins - by Laurell K. Hamilton

Pub Date: 04/01/2003 Check library catalog
ISBN: 0425188361
Ah, Anita Blake, Leopard Queen and consort of both Master Vampire Jean-Claude and Micah, the leopard shapeshifter, what will you do this time? Will you into a psychic tussle with Jean-Claude's oldest ancestor? Perhaps hunt for a serial killer who targets the innocent women of St. Louis? Maybe have an erotic encounter--or several? In this 11th book in the series, Anita does what she does so well as she comes to Jean-Claude's assistance when his oldest ancestor sends one of her vicious and powerful underlings to town and she also manages to investigate an apparently inhuman murderer. And she has sex, a lot. There are many Anita lovers, but only one Anita. Enjoy!

Odd Thomas - by Dean Koontz
Publisher: Bantam Books
Pub Date: 12/01/2003 Check library catalog
ISBN: 0553802496
Odd Thomas sees dead people, and talks to them too. Heck, he even avenges their murders, and, in this book, tries to stop a killer before he can create even more ghosts. Odd, an immensely likeable 20-year-old fry cook, also sees "bodachs," harbingers of violence and death. He knows the stranger in town is up to no good when multiple bodachs surround the man. Odd puts the spatula down, investigates, and is soon trying to prevent a planned catastrophe. Dark humor punctuates this story that most anyone will enjoy. And, Elvis fans take note: the King may be dead, but Odd can see him. Publishers Weekly says Koontz "does everything right" and calls the book "marvelous." There's a sequel too--Forever Odd.

Hell House - by Richard Matheson
Publisher: Severn House Pub Ltd
Pub Date: 07/30/2004 Check library catalog
ISBN: 0727860992
Originally published in 1971 by Award-winning author Richard Matheson, this is the classic haunted house story. The premise: an aging millionaire seeks proof of life after death. He employs a group of investigators--a parapsychologist, his wife, a survivor of an earlier investigative team, and a spiritualist medium--to probe the mysteries of the supposedly haunted and evil Belasco House. Spirit possession and violence soon erupt. Even Stephen King called this "the scariest haunted house novel ever written"--and aren't you curious about what would scare Stephen? Fans of haunted house novels should also check out Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House.

Waiting - by Frank M. Robinson
Publisher: Tor
Pub Date: 04/01/2000 Check library catalog
ISBN: 0812541642
What if there was another species of humans passing as regular humans? They look the same, only they care more about the environment, are telepathic, and are generally peaceful--not so scary, huh? But they become a bit more dangerous when they get tired of the mess humans are making of the world and decide to use their telepathic powers to kill us all. How convenient, no guns or knives needed! TV journalist Arthur Banks stumbles upon the existence of the beings while investigating the mysterious death of a friend. Now Banks' wife and disabled son are missing. Thriller readers should enjoy this tale that Publishers Weekly says "will have...readers looking more closely at their so-called friends."

Ring - by Koji Suzuki; translated by Robert B. Rohmer and Glynne Walley
Publisher: Vertical
Pub Date: 04/01/2003 Check library catalog
ISBN: 1932234004
Read the book and avoid the dangers of video! Though there are two movies based on this work--an American and a Japanese version--you may want to skip them. Why? Read on. Japanese journalist Kazayuki Asakawa's niece mysteriously dies of heart failure at the exact same time as three other Japanese youths. Asakawa investigates the deaths and discovers all four had watched a videotape that warns viewers they will die in seven days unless certain instructions--now missing--are followed. Asakawa, having watched the tape, now has seven days to solve the case and he soon traces the tape to a psychic and her young daughter. Mystery readers as well as Japanese fiction readers should answer the call of this frightening book that's the 1st in a trilogy (next up is Spiral then Loop).
