Realistic Fiction. Since Mikey's younger sister, Karyn, accused college boy Tom Parker of raping her, she's been too traumatized to leave the house. The police don't seem to be doing much, so Mikey goes over to Tom's house, heavy wrench in hand, intent on getting revenge. But instead, Mikey meets Tom's sister, Ellie -- and the instant connection they feel makes life much more complicated for both of them. If you like emotionally intense romance that explores family dynamics and social issues, don't miss this riveting novel from the author of Before I Die.

Realistic Fiction. Having been ditched one too many times by his flaky sort-of girlfriend, Colleen, aspiring filmmaker Ben Bancroft wonders whether someone his overbearing grandmother approves of -- like popular, pretty, academically driven A.J., who is just as big of a film nut as Ben -- might be a better match for him. But can A.J. really see past Ben's cerebral palsy like Colleen does? Fans of the 1st book, Stoner & Spaz (and other all-about-the-'tude novels like Barry Lyga's The Astonishing Adventures of Fanboy and Goth Girl), will be pleased to find the same sort of witty, electric banter in Now Playing, and film buffs will appreciate the movie references peppered throughout.

Urban Fantasy. Seventeen-year-old Karou leads a dual life: one as the enigmatic, blue-haired art student whose sketches of bizarre creatures fascinate her classmates -- and the other with the only family she has ever known, the chimaerae for whom she runs strange errands around the globe (and who are the very real subjects in her artwork). But after she is attacked by what appears to be an angel on one of her missions, both of Karou's worlds begin to unravel. Fantasy readers who crave lovingly described settings, both otherwordly and actual, will be thrilled with this atmospheric tale of loyalty, love, and the beginnings of a supernatural war.

Dystopian Romance. There are a lot of shortages and regulations in 2083 -- chocolate and caffeine are contraband, for example, and water and paper are carefully rationed -- but star-crossed lovers still get pierced by Cupid's arrow like they always have. So it is with 16-year-old Anya Balanchine, the heir apparent of an important New York City crime family, who is falsely accused of murder and soon after falls for the son of the lawyer who's prosecuting her case. Rife with mafia intrigue, family drama, and (most of all) swoon-worthy, "achingly realistic" (Horn Book) romance, this 1st volume in the Birthright series is not to be missed.
If You Like: The Future of Us
Wildly popular authors Jay Asher (13 Reasons Why) and Carolyn Mackler (The Earth, My Butt, and Other Big, Round Things) have written a novel together called The Future of Us, which comes out this month. Set in the mid-1990s, it tells the story of best friends Emma and Josh, who are trying to deal with an awkward bit of romantic tension that's developed between them when Emma gets a glimpse of what's to come -- the AOL disc she receives with her new computer somehow connects to her 15-years-in-the-future Facebook page! If there are a lot of people ahead of you in the request queue for The Future of Us, one of the books below might satisfy you while you wait. They're all character-centered tales of friendship and romance that aren't fantasy novels, per se, but do take some interesting liberties with reality.

Graphic Novel. After Grace Kwon has a strange mishap with a piñata on her 18th birthday, she's beside herself -- literally. Some unknown force has caused Grace's six-year-old self, her 30-year-old self, and her 70-year-old self to materialize in 18-year-old Grace's here and now, and they're causing all kinds of trouble. Funny, thought-provoking, and full of great friend-drama as well as a touch of romance, Good as Lily is a rare bit of "Amerimanga" that's appealing to both fans of Japanese manga and those who don't normally read comics.

Then she drops her cell phone in a fountain...and when she fishes it out, it will only call one number: her own, from when she was 14. Can Devi turn her life around with advice from her younger self? Adult Fiction. Henry and Clare's epic love story is far from typical. Henry suffers from Chrono-Displacement, a genetic disorder that snatches him out of the present and flings him into other times within his life span -- so while Clare is just a child when she meets Henry, he is in his 40s, in the midst of one of his unpredictable trips through time. As Clare grows up, they fall in love, and at 20 she meets Henry in the timeline they share, but he has not yet met her in his travels and doesn't know her. Their convoluted love story is narrated by both Clare and Henry and is a good choice for those who enjoyed the well-developed characters and dual, long-view perspectives in The Future of Us.

Fiction. Popular Samantha Kingston dies in a car accident after a wild party...but instead of seeing her whole life replayed before her eyes, she wakes up to live her last day over again. And again. And again. As Sam tries to change her destiny by altering small decisions and acts in the course of that one repeated day, she begins to realize how she has affected other people -- and who she really wanted to be. This compelling novel is full of realistic characters, believable dialogue, and heartbreaking insights. The suspense of wondering whether Sam will finally get it right will keep you turning the pages, and as in The Future of Us, it's fascinating to see the effect that seemingly tiny decisions have on a character's future.

Fiction. Sixteen-year-old London Lane forgets her past each night -- but she knows about events and recognizes people from her future. Using her carefully taken notes and reminders from her best friend and her mom to get through each day, London muddles through believing that there's no cure for her condition. But after handsome Luke enters London's life and her "flashforwards" become more disturbing, she realizes that the mystery of her past must be solved in order to preserve her future. While sticklers for logic may be frustrated by the time-travel aspects of this novel's complicated plot, fans of "intense romance" (Kirkus Reviews) will be captivated.
