Captain Octavia Pye is surprised to find an unconscious, oddly-dressed man and an equally unusually clad woman aboard her airship. There's evil afoot in her world, and Octavia wonders if these two are pirates or secret agents. After an explosion in his lab, Dr. Jack Fletcher is shocked to wake up beside his sister in a Victorian airship, complete with a no-nonsense captain and crew, all of whom are outfitted in late nineteenth-century fashion. Jack thinks he has gone back in time; instead he's astounded to learn that it's the same day as the explosion. Caught in a parallel universe where technology is still at the steam engine stage, Jack finds himself pulled between a longing for home and an increasingly stronger desire for the intrepid Octavia. MacAlister hits it out of the park with this highly entertaining steampunk fantasy. There's danger, adventure, romance, and lots of humorous moments as Jack and Octavia discover that the laws of love always trump the laws of physics.

New York City jewelry designer Garet James, distracted by her father's looming financial problems and a sudden, unseasonable fog, shelters in a Village shop she hadn't known was there. The proprietor, John Dee, presses a commission upon her, to unseal an antique silver box embossed with the same design that the ring Garet wears also bears. Almost despite herself, Garet takes the box home and opens it with her welding torch. Whatever the box contained goes up in smoke, save for a scrap of paper bearing the name Will Hughes. Some process within Garet herself changes too, or perhaps awakens. That night, thieves break in to steal some of her father's valuable paintings—and the box. Her father, shot but alive, whispers that the thieves were...demons. The mysterious Will Hughes, so Garet discovers, is in fact a super-rich hedge fund manager. The avuncular John Dee, according to Will, is in fact the evil, immortal former astrologer of Queen Elizabeth I; Garet's mother was, or possibly is, a member of a coven of immortal witches; and Will himself is a vampire. The plot continues to thicken. Everything happens at a gallop. The writing is creamy smooth.

Clever and assured, with an authentic NYC setting. What it lacks is a few jagged edges.

After fleeing the Royal Huntsman, Rosamund meets the seven dwarfs, drinks a potion, and falls asleep. When Viking hero Siegfried finds her, he tries to kiss her awake--but Lily, Rosamund's fairy godmother, has other ideas and manipulates events to satisfy the Tradition while giving Rosamund a chance at a loving prince and happy ending. Lackey's fifth fairy tale retelling (after 2008's The Snow Queen) also includes passing nods to "Hansel and Gretel," "The Frog Prince," and "Puss-in-Boots," along with cameo appearances by Brunnhilde and Wotan.

Reading Hughart's endearing historical fantasy trilogy, first published almost 20 years ago, is much like "wandering blindfolded through a myth devised by a maniac," in the words of Master Li, the greatest and most frequently intoxicated wise man in a colorful seventh century "China that never was." Slow, strong and good-hearted peasant Number Ten Ox initially seeks Master Li's help to cure a bizarre plague and soon becomes his sidekick. Their rollicking adventures pit them against everyone from murderers and thieves to emperors and gods. Numerous Chinese legends, filtered through Ox's simple perspective, blend seamlessly into tales both lighthearted and heartrending.

Set in a mystical fantasy world similar to Medieval Japan, Hearn's story of murder and clan intrigue opens the Tales of the Otori. Sixteen-year-old Takeo, brought up in a remote mountain village of the Hidden, a persecuted religious sect, is rescued by the mysterious Lord Otori Shigeru when the evil warlord Iida Sadamu destroys Takeo's village. It is not by happenstance that Shigeru is near Takeo's village. He knows who Takeo's father was and the fighting skills the boy would have inherited genetically. Unbeknownst to Takeo, he is by birth a member of the Tribe, a group of assassins with magical powers, such as the ability to appear in two places at the same time and the power of invisibility. Shigeru adopts the orphaned Takeo, and Kenji, a member of the Tribe sent to keep an eye on the boy, begins training Takeo to master the skills necessary to assassinate Iida, Lord Shigeru's nemesis. Add Lady Maruyama, Shigeru's secret love, and her cousin, fifteen-year-old Kaede, Shigeru's arranged bride-to-be, who is actually in love with Takeo, and the result is intrigue thickened with the bittersweet longings of star-crossed lovers.
