The Delaware River: An Immigrant History April 9 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm Water played a practical role in the development of American societies. The availability of navigable waters affected settlement and migration patterns. The Delaware River basin is an ecosystem, a thorofare, a natural resource, and a dumping ground! The history of the Delaware River’s settlement and the diverse waves of migrations that peopled its shores, and the changes wrought by the leveling of forests, the conversion of wetlands to arable land, the capture of its fish and wildlife, and lastly its use as a source of safe drinking water and the dilution of wastes, speaks volumes about the challenges we face to keep it sustainable and a testimony to both its endurance and frailty. Please join us as retired research scientist Thomas Belton explores how the Delaware River both shaped and was shaped by the constant flux of travel and immigration through that waterway, particularly in the context of New Jersey’s history.

The First Indonesians in the Tri-State Area: A Hidden History of Migration & Survival April 21 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm Did you know one of the first documented Indonesian families in the US lived in Elizabeth, NJ, before WWII? Award-winning author Brian Kimmel presents a fascinating “local history” edition of his memoir, Blue Skies, Troubled Waters. Through rare archival documents—including 1940s Newark newspaper clippings and unclassified military maps—Kimmel traces the journey of early migrants from the Dutch East Indies to the Tri-State area. He explores the complex identity of these “First Indonesians,” distinct from the post-war “Indo” wave. The presentation highlights the legacy of the 1925 Youth Pledge and Minahasan leaders like Sam Ratulangi (a cousin of the author’s grandmother), who helped forge a national Indonesian identity long before independence. This presentation unveils a hidden chapter of New Jersey history that connects local families to the global stage of WWII and the birth of a nation. Register Here
