Happy Bookers Discussion Group: Before the Coffee Gets ColdWednesday, February 25, 7:00pm In a small back alley of Tokyo, there is a café that has been serving carefully brewed coffee for more than one hundred years. Local legend says that this shop offers something else besides coffee—the chance to travel back in time. Over the course of one summer, four customers visit the café in the hopes of making that journey. But time travel isn’t so simple, and there are rules that must be followed. Most important, the trip can last only as long as it takes for the coffee to get cold. Multiple copies of the book are available for reserve. See

With the winter weather we’ve been having, I’ve been baking a lot of bread recently. Baking bread seems to cause hesitation in a lot of bakers. I’m not sure if it’s the yeast or the kneading, but I have found that bread is actually quite forgiving. As long as the water isn’t too hot, you won’t kill the yeast. By dissolving it in the warm water before you add it to the dough, you will see that it’s active. If it doesn’t foam up, throw it out and use new yeast (check the expiration dates). You don’t want to let the dough rise too much, or else it will collapse and you’ll end up with very flat loaves. This is a recipe I’ve been using for several years and always have good results. The bread stays soft for several days. I will usually slice both loaves and keep one in the kitchen for eating immediately and one goes into the freezer for later. (I just place it in a freezer bag – no thawing needed if you’re toasting it.) If you haven’t tried making your own bread, I hope this encourages you to take the leap. Nothing smells better than fresh baked bread you’ve made yourself.

Family of Spies: A World War II Story of Nazi Espionage, Betrayal, and the Secret History Behind Pearl Harbor by Christine KuehnA propulsive, never-before-told story of one family's shocking involvement as Nazi and Japanese spies during WWII and the pivotal role they played in the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The Kuehns, a once-prominent Berlin family, saw the rise of the Nazis as a way out of the hard times that had befallen them. When the daughter of the family, Eberhard's sister, Ruth, met Nazi leader Joseph Goebbels at a party, the two hit it off, and they had an affair. But Ruth had a secret--she was half Jewish--and Goebbels found out. Rather than having Ruth killed, Goebbels instead sent the entire Kuehn family to Hawaii, to work as spies half a world away. There, Ruth and her parents established an intricate spy operation from their home, just a few miles down the road from Pearl Harbor, shielding Eberhard from the truth. They passed secrets to the Japanese, leading to the devastating attack on Pearl Harbor. After Eberhard's father was arrested and tried for his involvement in planning the assault, Eberhard learned the harsh truth about his family and faced a decision that would change the path of the Kuehn family forever. Jumping back and forth between Christine discovering her family's secret and the untold past of the spies in Germany, Japan, and Hawaii, Family of Spies is fast-paced history at its finest, and will rewrite the narrative of December 7, 1941. Selected by Cindy, Senior Library Assistant

Ladies in Hating by Alexandra VastiCelebrated authoress Lady Georgiana Cleeve has achieved fame and fortune. Unfortunately, she’s also acquired an enemy: the enigmatic Lady Darling, whose spine-tingling plots appear to be pulled straight from Georgiana’s own manuscripts. What’s a stubborn, steely writer to do? Unmask her rival, of course. But unmasking doesn’t go according to plan―because Lady Darling is actually Cat Lacey, the butler’s daughter and object of Georgiana’s very secret, very embarrassing teenage infatuation. Cat Lacey has spent a decade clawing her family out of poverty. The last thing she needs is to be distracted by the stunning(ly pretentious) Lady Georgiana Cleeve. But Cat can’t seem to escape her infuriatingly beautiful rival―including at the eerie manor where they both plan to set their next books. The plot unexpectedly thickens, however, when the novelists find themselves trapped in the manor together. In between ghostly moans and spectral staff, Cat and Georgiana come face-to-face with real danger: the scorching passion that’s been haunting their rivalry all along. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime. Selected by Lori, Supervising Library Assistant

Replaceable You: Adventures in Human Anatomyby Mary RoachThe body is the most complex machine in the world, and the only one for which you cannot get a replacement part from the manufacturer. For centuries, medicine has reached for what's available--sculpting noses from brass, borrowing skin from frogs and hearts from pigs, crafting eye parts from jet canopies and breasts from petroleum by-products. Today we're attempting to grow body parts from scratch using stem cells and 3D printers. How are we doing? Are we there yet? In Replaceable You, Mary Roach explores the remarkable advances and difficult questions prompted by the human body's failings. Selected by Stephanie, Reference Librarian
