Mayor Rawlings kicks off 2018 Summer Reading Challenge

Mayor Mike Rawlings and Dallas Public Library Director Jo Giudice joined community and business supporters and students from Dallas ISD’s Charles Rice Learning Center May 17 to kick off the 2018 Mayor’s Summer Reading Challenge.
“For 45 years, the City of Dallas, Dallas Public Library, Dallas ISD and many others have partnered to host the Mayor’s Summer Reading Challenge,” said Dallas Public Library Director Jo Giudice. “As a result, more than 300,000 children have participated in the program.” The program encourages children and adults to read at least 20 minutes every day.
Kids' prizes include tickets to the Dallas Zoo, Texas Rangers and Dallas Mavericks games, SMU’s Meadows Museum, Dallas Children’s Theater, Medieval Times and more. And to include grown-ups; for every 10 days of 20-minutes reading, adults will be entered into a drawing for special grand prizes. The Challenge runs June 2 to August 11.  Learn more and sign up here: 
 
 
From flappers to UFO’s - Summer Saturdays has something for everyone!
Where can you relive four decades of the last century, become a time traveler, explore paranormal activities and find out what the government doesn’t want you to know about UFO’s? At the Dallas Public Library June 2 through July 28.
 
“Summer Saturdays at the Central Library will feature an eclectic mix of free programs and activities,” said Senior Librarian Ann Bever. “In addition to out-of-this world stuff, we’ll highlight arts and culture with a Rauschenberg talk and workshops, a world languages and culture fair, a Juneteenth celebration, and much more,” she said.

Dallas Public Library programs make it a SMART summer
We're offering more programs and activities this summer than ever before! Take advantage of the Science, Math, Art, Reading and Technology programs available at every library location and stay SMART this summer. Hands-on experiments, science and animal demonstrations, musical performances, and creative projects are scheduled throughout the school break. In conjunction with the Mayor’s Summer Reading Challenge, the library’s summer learning programs help kids and teens maintain their skills and perform better in school.
Programming begins June 2. Check out the schedule of events posted at your neighborhood branch or search for events at www.dallaslibrary.org/events. June is Pride month 
 
The June 1969 riot at the Stonewall Inn in Manhattan is often considered to be the beginning of the gay liberation movement in the United States. Launched in 2000, Gay and Lesbian Pride Month is held in June to commemorate this important event in lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered (LGBT) history.   •  We’re sad to note the passing of Lloyd de Witt Bockstruck, who worked in the Genealogy Division of the Library for 36 years, 30 of which as supervisor. After retiring in 2009, Lloyd continued to be active in the genealogical field and volunteered his time and considerable expertise to the Library. “Dallas Public Library has lost a legend. We are so sad for his passing, but his memory will live on in his legacy here at the Library,” Library Director Jo Giudice posted on Facebook.   • Plano Magazine has an article about the connection between the United States and the town of Margraten, Netherlands. Residents have adopted every single American soldier’s grave (there are 8,301 of them) and bring flowers to the graves on birthdays and other special occasions.   • Another shoutout to the Library for help with research came from Ana Hagedorn, a graduate student at SMU who has written a play based on the letters and papers of Dallas theater legend Margo Jones. The resulting one-woman show, Let Me Talk My Dreams, had its world premiere in late May in Fair Park – at the Margo Jones Theatre.
