All Urbandale Reads Community Book Discussion Wednesday, June 5th at 6:30 PM Join us for a community Book Discussion of the 2019 All Urbandale Reads Book selection, The Story of Arthur Truluv by Elizabeth Berg. Art Gallery Reception Saturday, June 8th, 10:00 - 11:30 AM Meet artists, Timothy Schuett and Laura Todd, whose wood sculptures and paintings are on display in the Library's Art Gallery May 1 - June 14. All Urbandale Reads Presents: Re-Imagining Aging Tuesday, June 18th at 11:30 AM Explore the concept of re-imagining aging and other related themes present in the 2019 All Urbandale Reads book, The Story of Arthur Truluv by Elizabeth Berg. Feel free to bring a sack lunch to this discussion. Discussion will be led by Christine Dietz, Ph.D., L.I.S.W., Training Director, Therapist and Spiritual Director, Des Moines Pastoral Counseling Center. Thursday, June 27th at 6:00 PM Join us this summer for new and classic movies about outer space that align with our Summer Reading Program theme, "A Universe of Stories." For adults ages 18+. Active Adults - New Day starting in June! Wednesdays from 9:30 to 11:30 AM Join other adults at this adult drop-in program on Wednesdays for board games, coloring, puzzles, crafts, and more! Friday FlicksFridays at 1:00 PM Join us this summer for new and classic movies about outer space that align with our Summer Reading Program theme, "A Universe of Stories." For adults ages 18+. Adult Recreational Chess Saturdays from 1:00 to 4:00 PM The library offers an adult recreational chess club for people of all skill levels, even beginners! This is your chance to learn the game, play the game, and meet other people interested in the game. Chess sets provided, or bring your own. Adult Book Clubs Booked for Dinner meets in Meeting Room A on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 6:00 PM. On the Same Page meets in the Library Conference Room on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 7:30 PM. New time coming in July! 12:00 Noon Brown Bag meets in Meeting Room A on the last Tuesday & Thursday of each month at 12:00 Noon.

Interactive Texting Movie Saturday, June 1st at 1:00 PM Help kick off "A Universe of Stories" Summer Reading Program with special showing of a classic 1953 film about aliens from outer space! For ages 12 through adult. About the film: It Came from Outer Space (NR/81 min./1943). A spaceship from another world crashes in the Arizona desert and only an amateur stargazer and a schoolteacher suspect alien influence when the local townsfolk begin to act strangely.... Bring your phone and text about the movie with fellow attendees!

Friday, June 7th at 7:00 PM Join the Laser Tag battle and bring your Nerf Blaster (or use one of ours) for an epic Nerf War! Registration required for this after-hours event; online or by calling 515-278-3945. A signed permission slip must be presented at the time of the event. Ages 12-17 ONLY Adults must drop teens off in the meeting room at 7:00 PM and pick up teens at the front doors at 9:00 PM. All teens must be signed in and out by a parent or pre-approved adult. No one will be allowed to leave the building alone. Teen Tie Dye Wednesday, June 12th at 5:00 PM Teens age 12-17 can join us to make tie dye t-shirts. The library will supply the shirts and dye! Note: Shirts will be dyed at the library and put into plastic bags, but will need to be washed at home. Please register online or by calling 515-278-3945. Ages 12-17 ONLY Nailed It! Teen Challenge Wednesday, June 26th at 6:00 PM We’ll provide the blank cookie canvas and the challenge, you try your hand at re-creating beautifully decorated baked goods! Art from Scratch Mondays at 6:00 PM In this 8-week course, kids ages 10-14 will learn the basics of computer science as they work with Scratch to create animations, interactive artwork, photograph filters, and other exciting artistic projects! Ages 10-14. Please register each participant online or by calling 515-278-3945. Projects are cumulative, so please plan on attending most weeks! Galaxy of Crafts Tuesdays in June, 3:00-5:00 PM Drop in for a variety of space related crafts--from sand art to sun prints. We'll have different projects each week for a variety of ages. Please note, not all projects will appeal to all ages. Some projects are messy, so dress accordingly! Projects are while supplies last. Ages 4-12. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult. Please register for each week you will attend. 4-H Food, Culture, & Literacy Wednesdays in June (starting June 12),10:00 AM Come learn about foods from various cultural backgrounds! We will explore foods from Mexico, Russia, Greece, Kenya, Japan, and the United States. Learn about the food groups, healthy eating habits, and how to live a healthy lifestyle. Don’t forget, come with an empty belly because we will create and sample the foods discussed in the books we read. Ages 7-12. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult. Heartland AEA is providing an inflatable planetarium so you can see the cosmos and learn about celestial bodies. For kids of all ages. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult. Blank Park Zoo: Otherworldly Adaptations Friday, June 14th at 10:00 AM From the dry desert to the soggy swamp, animals can be found in many different habitats around the world! Just as an astronaut needs a spacesuit in outer space, animals require many special adaptations to survive in their environments. Join a Blank Park Zoo educator as we meet animals from the zoo’s Education Department and learn about their “otherworldly” adaptations. For kids of all ages. One Woman Wonder Wednesday, June 19th at 6:00 PM Martika Daniels is a one woman circus, and you can get in on the act! Join her interactive show and enjoy amazing stunts! For all ages. Wonder of Drones Thursday, June 27th at 6:00 PM Find out what it takes to work with drones, explore drone technology, and learn how drones are changing the world! Women and Drones is a national platform for women in the UAS industry, and they’ll be on hand to show you the drones and answer all your questions! For ages 6+. Thursdays at 9:00 AM It’s a music and movement program for the preschool set! With a chance for stretching, singing, dancing, and instruments, we’ll keep you moving through each song! Ages 2-7, siblings welcome! Plan on attending and participating with your child.

Summer 2019 Storytime Schedule (June 1 – July 31) Please make note of our Summer Storytime schedule. To accommodate our summer crowds and special events, there are several changes to our regularly scheduled programs starting June 1.
Book Babies Mondays and Tuesdays at 9:00 AM Bounce, sing, shake, and play with us at this “can’t sit still” story time! We’ll have 20-30 minutes of interactive programming, followed by an unstructured playtime where children and caregivers can interact with their peers! Toddler Time Mondays and Tuesdays at 10:00 AM This short-attention span story time is perfect for toddlers. We’ll share short books, rhymes, and music. This 20-30 minute story time incorporates movement and music and understands that sitting still is tricky sometimes! Family Story Time Mondays and Tuesdays at 10:45 AM Tuesdays at 7:00 PM Join us for fun and interactive stories to keep the whole family entertained and engaged. The program will last approximately 30 minutes and will include slightly longer stories, singing, and playing!
