Library Events and Programs for July 2013
Director's Corner
Congratulations are in order for the Friends of The Library scholarship winners Ameema Zubairi and Neil Bhide, Class of 2013. The $500 scholarships were awarded at the East Brunswick High School award ceremony. Both Ameema and Neil volunteered many hours at The Library in the Youth Services Department in varied activities throughout their High School years. The Friends scholarships are made possible with your membership dues. We thank the Friends for supporting the young people of our community who volunteer at The Library. We wish Ameema and Neil well as they continue their educational journeys.

Back by popular demand! The Library is happy to announce new drop-in sessions for all those knitting and crochet aficionados and all other needle crafters. Come share your tips and learn new tricks with the help of Sandy Kandel, our intrepid needle guru.

Please remember that there is nothing better than a good summer read as we enter the dog days of summer. Library staff is always happy to introduce you to a good book or show you the many resources we have for reader’s advisory.  So be sure to stop by the Information Desk and ask for some suggestions as we enjoy the lazy days of summer!

I wish all our residents a relaxing, enjoyable summer.

Exhibits and Displays—Global Colors
On Exhibit: Paintings by Glenford John
An accomplished artist who works in a variety of mediums, Sayreville artist Glenford John’s vibrant work incorporates his passion for nature and his love for people. With his unique style, Glen catches the essence of the Caribbean lifestyle in which he grew up. Glenford taught art and owned an art gallery in his native island of Dominica, where he was a featured artist in the book, Our Island Culture. His credits include first place honors at NYC’s Fulton Arts Fair, a showing at the Castillo Gallery in NYC and an interview by host Gentle Ben on the GBTV program, Culture Share.

On Display: World Doll Collection by Martha Bennett
Learn about traditional world costumes and cultures with this colorful collection by East Brunswick resident Martha Bennett. Martha started collecting dolls as a child. Her mother would write to people all over the world and they would send dolls for Martha and her sister. Her mother wanted the girls to respect all cultures and appreciate how the differences among people make the world a more beautiful and interesting place. Martha has expanded the collection through visits to antique shops and her own global travels, supplemented by dolls contributed by family and friends. She even uses the dolls for “doll therapy” at Parker Nursing Home. Martha invites viewers of this exhibit to “enjoy the beauty of all the cultures and seek peace in the world.”

EXHIBITORS WANTED
The Library is creating a file of potential exhibits and displays. The goal is to present an eclectic sampling of local artists (in all media) and intriguing exhibits of broad interest. If you have artwork, a collection or other display items you’d like to propose for future exhibits, please email jwork@ebpl.org requesting exhibit proposal information.
