From the Director's Desk

Laura writes about some of the challenges we met in 2020, adapting to the Covid-19 pandemic. How we began new services and increased the accessibility of our online programs, and sends a positive message to our library community for the New Year! Read Laura's letter.
Home Delivery Service
The Hershey Public Library is excited to offer a new service to Derry Township residents.
 
We will now deliver books and media right to your home! Please contact us at 717-533-6555 ext 3720 or send an email to library@derrytownship.org with your requests. Your delivery items will be checked out to you and dropped off at your door.The service is available Monday to Friday.
  • Please include name, library card number and the items you’d like to request.
  • 10-item limit.
  • No returns will be accepted during home delivery service at this time.

Evaluating Online Health Information
This workshop will assist participants with evaluating health information they find online. It will teach them what questions to ask when evaluating an online source. This includes looking for signs of trustworthiness and signs of non-authoritative and potentially harmful information. Register online,

MedlinePlus for Online Health Information
In this workshop, participants will learn what type of health information is available in MedlinePlus, and how to navigate it to find the information that they need. MedlinePlus is an authoritative source for health information produced by the National Library of Medicine. Register online.
 
Tuesday, January 26. 6 pm to 7 pm.
Health information in the News
This workshop will teach participants to look beyond sensational news headlines. It will teach them strategies to recognize a potentially poor study or overinflated reporting of results by a news source. Register online.

Photoshop Class
Saturday, January 9. 10:00 am to 1:00 pm
 
The Zoom program presented by Bryson Leidich will look at control over tone and color in Lightroom and Photoshop. Included will be a look at the new Color Grading options which replaced the Split Toning dialog. Image colors also influence how images are converted to black and white. Register online.
Food Fight for Immune Health
Tuesday, January 19. 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm
 
Join The GIANT Company Nutritionist, Shanna Shultz, for a virtual crash course on building up your immune system with the power of food. She’ll discuss key elements to include into your diet while showcasing a recipe that could provide you with an added boost this season.

Carry & Craft Pom Pom Bookmark Edition for Children
Saturday, January 23. 10:00 am to 10:30 am
 
Join Ms. Rita and learn to make your own special bookmark. Ms.Rita will teach you how to make yarn Pom Poms and turn them into bookmarks to use in all your library books. You will need to pay close attention during the YourTube video (premiering on the day), but once you learn, you can make them for your friends and family.

Carry & Craft Felted Ball Coaster Edition for Teens/Adults
Saturday, January 23. 11:00 am to 11:30 am
 
Join Aly on the library's programming YouTube Channel and learn how to make a felted ball coaster. Pick up your kit for 2 coasters starting January 19 thru January 23 during the library's hours of operation. There are 28 spots available. These coasters will be a bright and colorful addition to any room.

AT-HOME BROWSING
If you miss browsing the shelves of the library, just give us a call and we'll bring the browsing experience to you. Our librarians will curate a bundle of items for you to pick up and consider. Read what sparks your interest and ignore the rest! We think your next favorite read will be one of these hidden gems.
Chocolate Town Connections
Feeling disconnected? Tired of Zoom Meetings and Canvas Classrooms? Do you have ideas, feelings, and creative juices? Do you have support to give? Then CHECK OUT Chocolate Town Connections. The Hershey Library community is being asked to write and share a book, or 6. We have put together a collection of blank notebooks and a sketchbook. Each book has its own prompt or theme. The rest is up to you. Young or old. Written or drawn. Collage or colored pencils, paint, etc.. Each book has guidelines and please keep it "family friendly."

Community Blood Drive at the Library

  • Please call the Central Pennsylvania Blood Bank at 1-800-771-0059 to schedule an appointment. Walk-ins might have to wait if there are appointments at that time. 
  • Masks are required.
  • Covid-19 Antibody Testing is available with each successful blood donation.
  • A form of ID is required to donate.
