Wednesday, April 29, 2026 @ 7pm Family Bibles are commonly listed in genealogy reference books as starting places for building your family tree. But where would you go if you didn't inherit your ancestor's prized possession? You will be introduced to online and archival collections of family bibles and copies of records, which can help you verify family relations and fill in the gaps of your research. Presented by professional genealogist, Jenny Warner. Saturday, May 9, 2026 @ 10am Hosted by the McHenry Library and the McHenry County Genealogical Society FamilySearch is one of the largest, most comprehensive sites for genealogy resources. Sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, FamilySearch provides researchers with millions of records, research wikis that act as resource guides, and also offers great family history education. The best part is that it’s free! The McHenry Library has also been a FamilySearch Affiliate for eight years. Affiliates have access to some records that aren't available with a regular account. Learn the basics on how to use this great genealogical resource with a tour of the website. Presented by the McHenry County Genealogical Society and the McHenry Public Library.

The American road has been celebrated in our lexicon, lore, legend, books, movies and songs. In 1837 three men surveyed a road from present day Algonquin, crossing the English prairie to McHenry . . . you know this road today as Route 31! Join retired history teacher and President of the McHenry County Historical Society Board, Robert Frenz, to hear stories of McHenry County roadways from 1837-1960.

by Libbie Aavang & Norine Mathey A wonderful book covering one of McHenry's western neighbors, the Village of Greenwood. The authors put in various clippings from local newspapers covering the history of the village chronologically by topic. Also included are several pictures supplied by past and present residents of Greenwood. In the front of the book, plat maps and the town layout are provided, which can be invaluable for family research.
