Summer Reading!
Summer Reading is coming back on Beanstack! As you know, the summer learning gap is a real challenge that our students face. The Summer Reading Program (SRP) is a great way to keep kids engaged in reading throughout the summer, with some fun prizes along the way, including a free book when they finish!

This year's theme is Adventure Begins At Your Library. Embark on the adventure of a lifetime through the pages of a book! In addition to SRP, we have great programs for children of all ages!

You can sign up beginning June 1 here:  http://mchenrylibrary.beanstack.org

We are working on a promotional video that will be uploaded to our YouTube channel. Make sure to keep an eye out for it! Adventure begins at MPLD!
Literacy Tip: Writing
Writing and reading go hand in hand. By writing, it helps kids learn the power of the spoken language. According to Bellingham Public Library, writing:
  • Helps build dexterity in children's fingers in order to be able to scribble, draw, and eventually write letters.
  • Helps with hand-eyed coordination.
  • Helps children become aware that print has meaning.
Ways to help children improve their writing skills include:
  • Drawing shapes and pictures.
  • Tracing in the sand or dirt with either a stick or your fingers.
  • Encouraging children to write their names on their drawings or label the parts of what they drew.
 Let's Read About:
Rainy days
Rain
by Cynthia Rylant

This ode to the beauty and magic of a rainy day—one during which some get cozy inside, while others soak up the showers—shows that rain is good for everyone!
Let's Go Puddling!
by Emma Perry

A group of children, along with their parents, gather together to stimp-stamp-stomp through the muddy puddles in front of their apartment building, ending the day by snuggling with the grown-ups on the couch as their soggy socks dry.
Raindrop, Plop!
by Wendy Cheyette Lewison

When the rain begins to fall, a young child finds many new things to see and explore as she puts on shoes, jumps in puddles, and splashes in the water, in a simple counting book with full-color illustrations.
Split! Splat!
by Amy Gibson

The creators of Around the World on Eighty Legs present an exuberant tribute to rainy days that combines whimsical, rhythmic text and brightly colored, endearing illustrations of a little girl and her dog, who put down the umbrella and remove shoes to splash and dance with their neighbors.
Come On, Rain!
by Karen Hesse

A young girl eagerly awaits a coming rainstorm to bring relief from the oppressive summer heat
Songs & Rhymes
Do you need a rhyme/fingerplay?

Movement Song
“It Ain’t Gonna Rain No More”
It ain’t gonna rain no more, no more
It ain’t gonna rain no more
Oh no, it’s up to my toe
But it ain’t gonna rain more.

Additional verses:
Oh gee, it’s up to my knee
Oh my, it’s up to my thigh
Oh fiddle, it’s up to my middle
Oh heck, it’s up to my neck
Oh dread, it’s up to my head, I’m just going to swim on home.
