This Spring, the Burlingame Community reads They Called Us Enemy by George Takei, along with participating libraries in California, Oregon, and Washington. They Called Us Enemy is a #1 New York Times bestselling graphic memoir by actor, author, and activist George Takei. Through vivid art and gripping storytelling, Takei recounts his childhood experience of incarceration following Executive Order 9066 in 1942, along with over 120,000 people of Japanese descent.

Dr. Dizon is a licensed psychologist who uses a certified therapy dog, Dogtor Jethro, in her practice. This workshop will help parents recognize signs of anxiety, learn practical skills to support their child, and understand when to seek additional help. She will also demonstrate how animal-assisted support can help children regulate emotions and feel more at ease.

A screening and conversation for parents to help them discuss healthy relationships and sexuality with their children. Presented by filmmaker and certified sexual health educator Preeti Mankar Deb.

The Last Word: Learn the Art of Writing an Obituary
Wednesday, April 22 from 6 to 7 pm Upper Level Meeting Room
Move beyond using a template and write an obituary that creates a meaningful, honest and truly reflective story of a life lived. A well-written obituary is an act of kindness and a lasting gift for yourself and your loved ones.
Join us for class in person in the Upper Level Meeting Room and enjoy refreshments while you learn in community with other writers. Also available via Zoom. A Zoom link will be sent out to all registrants the day before the event.
Your instructor, Mary McGreevy, will join us from Minnesota, where her childhood hobby of reading obituaries blossomed into the best chapter of her life. Through her social media account, Tips from Dead People, (IG, TikTok, Substack), Mary uses storytelling to remind people what matters most (and least) in this trip around the sun.
The program will include an additional 30 minutes after instruction time to work on your writing.

Cosplay Workshop - Make your Cosplays Creative and Unique!
Saturday, May 2 from 11:00 - 4:00 PM Lane Community Room
In this workshop, participants will learn the basics of how to make their cosplays from scratch and how to modify premade cosplays. Participants will be learning from experienced cosplayers to find tips and inspirations to make their cosplays creative and unique to themselves.
The Stanford Blood Center bus returns in May. Drop-ins are welcome or register at their site: https://sbcdonor.org/donor/schedules/zip. It takes about 30 minutes to donate and your donation could help up to three people.

Three Boys Manzanar: Film Screening and Discussion

Discover the Emmy Award–winning short documentary Three Boys Manzanar, which reunites three men photographed as children while incarcerated at the Manzanar Internment Camp. Seventy years later, they revisit that moment and reflect on the lasting impact of their imprisonment. Director Preeti Mankar Deb and Executive Producer Akemi Ooka join us to share insights into the film and the importance of preserving this chapter of American history.
