What we do matters Regulars among my Righteous Readers will know that your Noble Narrator often looks at HPL's list observances for inspiration for this newsletter, and this issue is no exception. This time, a few stick out for the month of September, National Voter Registration Month (all of September) and Banned Books Week (September 22-28, 2024), as well as Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15-October 15, 2024). Some folks seem to get all riled up about what other people are allowed to read and who is allowed to participate in government, and HPL is here to make sure that you can get your hands on the books you need to entertain and educate yourself, as well as information on voting and other forms of political participation--and if we can highlight underrepresented communities in the process, all the better. So, in this issue we're going to give you the resources you need to vote and tell you about a bunch of great books that some folks just don't want you to read, as well as some books by Latino creators that might not have been on last year's list. (As a bonus, I'd be shocked if a few of these didn't end up being challenged in their own right in the coming years.) Remember if you are eligible to vote, the last day to register to vote for the November 2024 election in the State of Texas is October 7, 2024. You can print or request an application online, but the application itself needs to be mailed or physically delivered to your county Voter Registrar. the Texas Secretary of State's Office can help you check your eligibility and registration, as well as direct you to the appropriate county Voter Registrar. You can get voter registration applications from your local HPL location.
