Exhibit: It Shall Be Done: Recent Acquisitions from the Gregory School Collection On view Now through Saturday, April 30, 2016 Archival collections provide important documentation on African American culture and history. Photographs, documents and artifacts can give form to history, bridging past and present with explorations of emotions and experience. This exhibition brings together a selection of works from the collection that have rarely been shown. Represented will be important documents including a Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. funeral program, documentation for the inception of Houston College for Negroes (now Texas Southern University), rare artwork by John Biggers and Elizabeth Catlett, and oral histories from notable African Americans in Houston. Film and Dramatic Interpretation Thursday, January 14, 2016 “The Right to Dream” tells the story of a young African American growing up in the segregated South during the 1950s and 1960s. The struggle and sacrifice for civil rights in America is explained through this compelling story. The film and live dramatic interpretation illuminates the issues of civil rights, leading audiences to understand how the fight against prejudice has shaped our history. Students from local schools are invited. Performance times are scheduled for 10:30 AM, 12 PM and 1:30 PM. Oral History Workshop Saturday, January 23, 2016 | 2 PM Join oral historian for the Gregory School, Valerie Wade, as she offers an interactive presentation on oral history methods. The purpose of this presentation is to equip the community with basic knowledge for recording oral history interviews. Attendees will learn about the various types of oral history interviews, hardware and software for recording and editing, as well as other useful tips for collecting oral histories for Black History Month, family reunions, and other occasions.

Hispanic Genealogical Society of Houston Day Saturday, January 16, 2016 | 10:30 AM – 1 PM Please join us for an introduction to genealogical research on families of Hispanic descent. Members of the Hispanic Genealogical Society of Houston will give a brief presentation on how to begin putting together the puzzle of your family history, including data collection and organization, pedigree/ascendant and descendant charts, family group sheets, and using the computer for beginning research. After the presentation, a question and answer session will be held. Clayton Library Orientation Saturday, January 16, 2016 | 2 PM – 4 PM In Clayton Library’s monthly orientation we cover the process of research and discovery in the beginning steps of a family history project. Following this brief introduction, we examine the resources available at the Clayton Library and their organization, as well as how to plan an effective visit to the Library.

2016 Lunar New Year Celebration at the Houston Public Library Year of the Monkey The Chinese and Vietnamese Lunar New Year is based on the lunar cycle that falls between January 21 and February 20 on the Gregorian calendar this year. The Houston Public Library's Walter Neigborhood Library and HPL South West Express Library will be hosting the 2016 Year of the Monkey Lunar New Year celebration. This event is free and open to the public. Saturday, January 23, 2016 from 1 PM to 3:30 PM Walter Neighborhood Library 7660 Clarewood Dr. 77036 832-393-2500 Enjoy and explore Asian performances, music, songs, calligraphy, origami, paper cutting, lantern making and a Taichi demonstration and more!
