2020 RCLS Annual Meeting Recap
The 2020 RCLS Annual Business Meeting was held virtually on Friday, September 25.  The agenda action items included approval of the 2019 Annual Meeting minutes, presentation of the 2021 RCLS Budget and the re- election of RCLS trustees Anita Baumann of Florida, NY and Karen Bash-Romaner of Suffern, NY.  Both of their terms run through December 31, 2025. During his budget presentation, RCLS Fiscal Officer Stephen P. Hoefer commented that NY State Comptroller Thomas DeNapoli has stated that for 2021, the NYS financial hole is “getting deeper” and he predicts “more painful budget decisions lie ahead.”  Special guest attendee Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther voiced her continued support of libraries.  Recognition for years of service to RCLS were made to the following employees: Bernard Lenez, 5 years; Dave Krawczyk, 15 years and Jerry Kuntz, 25 years.     

RCLS Plan of Service
Focus Group Sessions   
RCLS is working on creating our Plan of Service for 2022-2026.  We want to hear from you, our library community.  In our efforts to provide the best service possible to our member libraries, RCLS will conduct 12 focus group sessions in October for library directors and staff.   Please share with us your ideas, concerns, and opinions on the services and opportunities we can offer going forward during these focus group sessions.  Register today for one of the online sessions that best fits your schedule, job duties and responsibilities by using the RCLS online calendar.  The groups are limited to no more than 12 participants.  Please register today.

Reading Builds Empathy
Valerie Williams-Sanchez, a Nyack Library trustee is conducting reading research for her doctoral dissertation in literacy.  This study’s goal is to determine whether there is a relationship between different reading behaviors, types of picture book content, characters, and themes are better (or worse) at helping young readers develop empathy.  If you’re interested in participating in this study, visit the website to register.  

NYLA's Developing Leaders Program  
This nine-month online program (November-June), totaling 37.5 contact hours, will help participants explore and strengthen their leadership skills.  The program is designed for individuals seeking to cultivate their skills and capacities in personal and organizational leadership.  Individuals with three or more years of experience working in libraries are invited to participate.  An MLS is not a pre-requisite for this program.  To access the schedule, tuition costs, application and more information, visit nyla.org.  Application and Recommendation deadline: Thursday, October 15, 2020.
