National Friends of Libraries Week is coming!
United for Libraries will coordinate the 15th annual National Friends of Libraries Week October 18th -24th. The celebration offers a two-fold opportunity to celebrate Friends. Use the time to creatively promote your group in the community, to raise awareness, and to promote membership. This is also an excellent opportunity for your library and Board of Trustees to recognize the Friends for their help and support of the library. For resources and ideas, visit

A Journey To Freedom: Harriet Tubman
The Newburgh Free Library will be hosting an iconic Harriet Tubman statue from October 12 to December 12, 2020.  The 2,400-pound, 9-foot-tall, bronze statue will grace the plaza in front of the library.  The Arrival Ceremony, from 5 – 6:30 pm, will be held outdoors, socially distanced and limited to 50.  It will feature dance group, “The Mouvas,” and choir, “Sounds of Heritage.”  Other Harriet Tubman-related programs scheduled during October can be found on the library’s website.
Plan of Service Focus Group Sessions
RCLS is working on creating our Plan of Service for 2022-2026. We want to hear from you, our library community. In our efforts to provide the best service possible to our member libraries, RCLS will conduct 12 focus group sessions for library directors and staff.   Please share with us your ideas, concerns, and opinions during these focus group sessions scheduled in October, on the services and opportunities we can offer going forward. Register today for one of the online sessions that best fits your schedule, job duties and responsibilities by using the RCLS online calendar.  The groups are limited to no more than 12 participants.  To assist you with your decision, each session is planned to run 90 minutes or less as needed.  Please register today.  You will receive a Zoom link to attend the session two days before the session date.

Through  Libraries Transforming Communities: Focus on Small and Rural Libraries, up to 650 U.S. libraries in small and rural communities will receive $3,000 to tackle issues ranging from media literacy to COVID-19 safety to unemployment.  The initiative is part of ALA's longtime commitment to preparing library workers for the expanding role of libraries.  Library workers may apply online for grant funding from September 21st to December 2nd, 2020, at ala.org/LTC.  Up to 650 grants will be distributed over two funding rounds.  Read the full project guidelines.
