Support and Action
The news cannot be ignored. While it’s important to remember that libraries welcome everyone, racism is still in existence in our communities and our profession. RCLS condemns racism towards Black people and all People of Color.
RCLS will be undertaking efforts to continue education and open dialogue initiatives, both immediately and for the foreseeable future, in order to open communication and have a meaningful conversation as to how we can support you, our field, and the library community.
The first program, Understanding Racism, in a series on racism and inclusion will be held on Wednesday, June 17 at 10 a.m. (waiting list) and Wednesday, June 24 at 10:30 a.m. via BlueJeans.
The second program will feature a panel of librarians of color speaking about their experiences in the profession. This program will take place on Wednesday, July 1 at 10 a.m. Register for Panel Discussion: Librarians of Color and Diversity in Libraries on the RCLS Calendar.
In addition to providing the platform and programs to foster conversation, RCLS will work closely with the Coalition for Library Workers of Color to increase diversity in library staff and support the career growth of this population.
The call to action is long overdue. We hope you will join RCLS and the Coalition for Library Workers of Color to further the conversation and become an integral part of the fight to end racism.
Grace Riario, RCLS Executive Director

ALA Survey of
U.S. Libraries
The American Library Association's (ALA) Libraries Respond: COVID-19 Survey of U.S. libraries documents a shift in services to support students, faculty, and communities at large during the crisis and phased preparations for the months ahead. While 99% of more than 3,800 libraries reported limited access to the physical building, survey respondents shared leaps in the use of digital content, online learning, and virtual programs.
During a webinar on Friday, June 12, survey administrators and librarians will discuss the results, with a focus on reopening practices and current and projected library budget and staffing impacts related to the crisis. For more information and to register, visit the United for Libraries website.
