Goshen Public Library & Historical Society Lends Historical Treasure

A surveyor’s minute compass made by accomplished Elizabeth, New Jersey clockmaker Aaron Miller in the mid-1700’s has been loaned from the collection of the Local History Room of the Goshen Public Library & Historical Society. Miller is credited with inventing the “minute compass,” a high precision compass that determined the bearing of an angle to a single minute greatly enhancing the accuracy of compasses.

The Aaron Miller minute compass will be on display as part of a unique exhibit entitled “Striking Beauty: New Jersy Tall Case Clocks, 1730-1830” at the Morven Museum and Garden in Princeton, New Jersey through February 18, 2024.
Directions to the museum and other information about both in-person and virtual visits of their exhibit is available on the museum website at: https://www.morven.org/about

This important historical compass is purported to have been used by local surveyor Thomas Moffat during the American Revolution and is an exceptionally rare example of 18th century technology and innovation.

Outreach Service to Communities

Being online is important for everything from job hunting to finding a place to live, accessing services online, and staying in touch with friends and family. RCLS and various member libraries have partnered with Digital Navigators of the Hudson Valley to help patrons access and use technology.

Library staff members at these different locations have undergone technical training to become Digital Navigators. These Digital Navigators can assist anyone using a device, securing free or low-cost internet service, and much more. The program is FREE and open to anyone who needs help. This includes people who have devices, phone service, or internet access but need help with use, or those who require internet access.
