RCLS and member libraries’ creative responses to COVID-19 closures are featured in this first short video created by John Borst, Senior Producer of Grandvue Productions. Grandvue Productions was signed by RCLS to create videos to be aired on social media venues. Please share this video on your website, in your newsletters, and on your social media outlets to let your patrons know what their library has to offer them during this crisis.
ALA Updates
The State of America’s Libraries 2020
ALA: The Scoop, Apr. 20
On April 20, ALA released its State of America’s Libraries 2020 report, an annual summary of library trends released during National Library Week, that outlines statistics and issues affecting all types of libraries during the previous calendar year. The report also includes the Top 10 Most Challenged Books for 2019, along with the reasons the books were cited for censoring. The report is available in PDF and HTML formats.
 
 
 
 
 
 
ALA Virtual:  Community Through Connection
ALA Conference Services, Apr. 20
The American Library Association will host ALA Virtual: Community Through Connection, an online event that will offer educational programming, special author events, and social networking June 24–26. The event format, specific content, and additional details will be announced soon on the new ALA Virtual website. The library community is encouraged to join online as ALA adapts and evolves in these changing times. Registration will open on May 11. Public Library Association has announced the release of its broadest survey to date on how public libraries are responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. Call for Nominations
RCLS Annual Meeting Awards
At the RCLS 33rd Legislative Breakfast and 61st Annual Meeting on Friday, September 25, 2020, the RCLS Board of Trustees will present four annual awards.
Nominations for all four awards must be submitted no later than Friday, June 19, 2020 by e-mail (RCLSawards@rcls.org). Other options for submitting nominations may be available at a later date. Watch for information in the coming weeks.

 
 
 

Twila Snead Award
The Twila Snead Award recognizes an outstanding Southeastern New York Library Resources Council (SENYLRC) member library, cultural heritage organization, program, service, or staff member.  The recipient(s) receives a commemorative award, and their name engraved on a permanent award which is displayed at SENYLRC headquarters. OCLC Community Engagement Award
How have you created impact and extended your reach? Public libraries continuously transform to better support local communities. Talking Points
At its Monday, April 20 meeting, the RCLS Board of Trustees had the following Talking Points:
  • RCLS has hired a PR firm and video producer to create marketing materials for the system.
  • The Division of Library Development approved the RCLS State Annual Report with congratulations as the first System to be done.
  • The RCLS Legislative Breakfast and Annual Meeting, COVID-19 permitting, is at the Bear Mountain Inn and Conference Center on Friday, September 25.
  • The Annual Meeting Awards nomination deadline is Friday, June 19.  For details, visit the RCLS website.
 
 
 
 
The Talking Points will be elaborated on in the Minutes of the April Board meeting, which will be posted to the RCLS website about a week before the next regular meeting on Monday, May 18 at RCLS.
