Back in the mid-nineteenth century, due to its poor supply of fresh and plentiful water, New York City was besieged with epidemics claiming thousands of lives as well as massive fires resulting in great financial loss. After several unsuccessful attempts to solve these problems, the Old Croton Aqueduct (OCA) was built and provided NYC with its first supply of fresh water. This photo lecture will provide a brief history of the OCA and how it transformed New York City. Mario Medici has walked the entire 41-mile aqueduct from Cortlandt, NY to the 42nd Street Library (to the end of the aqueduct) documenting the many historic and interesting attractions along the route many of which preceded the building of the OCA.
