Hermit Crab Writing Workshop Delaware Free Branch Saturday, September 7th, 12:00-2:00pm Join Open Mic First Friday poet, Joyce Hayden for a special writing workshop! Please register as space is limited. Hermit crabs are not suited to one shell for life. They constantly seek their optimal environment, one that allows them to grow as they need to. Sometimes, in order to tell a difficult or vulnerable story, a unique “form” or structure must be found to contain the specific content. In this workshop, participants will together create a series of possible found forms for poems they may be interested in trying, such as field guide entries, a course syllabus, or a college application. A focus on consciously combining specific form and content will allow participants a deeper connection to the themes they choose to explore. Participants will be provided with sample hermit crab poems for guidance, time to write, and an opportunity to share their new poem and discuss their writing experience.

John Conway Debuts a New Lecture! "Farming in Sullivan County: The Early Years" Jeffersonville Branch Tuesday, September 10th, 6:30pm Sullivan County has been home to three great industries over the years: timber, tanning, and tourism, but even as the county’s economy was being fueled by these big three, there were thousands of farms. In fact, in 1855, there were more than 125,000 acres of farmland under cultivation in the county. In 1880, records show there were 4,394 farms here, with the average farm comprising 107 acres. By 1890, the number of farms had decreased to 4,096, but the average size of a farm had increased slightly to 112 acres. In 1900, there were 3,887 farms averaging 123.2 acres, but by 1940, there were just 2,778 farms here. Find out more about this important way of life, as Sullivan County Historian John Conway presents for the first time anywhere, “Farming in Sullivan County: The Early Years.”
