On the Same Page: An Afternoon with the Author  Happy Land by Dolen Perkins-Valdez
Saturday, Oct. 18 at 2 p.m.  
Forsyth County Central Library Auditorium 
 
Close out a month of history, discovery, and discussions with Happy Land author Dolen Perkins-Valdez. She’ll discuss her New York Times bestselling novel inspired by historic events in North Carolina. A book-signing will follow her talk. 
 
Bookmarks will be selling Happy Land and her 2002 novel Take My Hand.

Come hear the fascinating history behind Happy Land, the novel inspired by the real-life Kingdom of the Happy Land, a historic community of freed Black people in Henderson County, North Carolina. Hendersonville historian and storyteller Ronnie Pepper will share the stories, people, and research that bring this remarkable chapter of local history to life.
On The Same Page: From the Power of the Grave - Old Salem Presents Happy Hill

What stories can a historic cemetery tell? Join us as Martha Hartley, Director of Moravian Research at Old Salem Museums & Gardens, explores the history of Happy Hill and its cemetery. Learn about the community, people, and events that shaped this important part of Winston-Salem’s history. The cemetery was recognized with a Winston-Salem historic marker in 2025.

Learn the basic moves of this beautiful dance form as we bring people of all ages together to promote health, happiness, and community. The classes are recommended for adults 55+ and suitable for all shapes, sizes, and fitness levels.

Come and join yarn crafters who like to knit, crochet, embroider, and such. Share each other’s company and maybe a tip or two about a project. Join us to share, discuss, and recommend favorite books in a relaxed and welcoming group setting. There’s no pre-set reading list, so bring whatever you’re currently reading, loving, or wanting to talk about. The group is geared toward men, but all are welcome.

Tai Chi for Beginners

Learn the calming practice of Tai Chi at the Lewisville Branch Library. This form of low-impact exercise and deep breathing is known to reduce stress and improve balance, strength, and flexibility.
 
A signed waiver is required to participate, and attendees younger than 18 must have a parental/guardian's signature. Registration opens two weeks before the Oct. 9 and Oct. 23 classes and is required.  
Witchy Washi & Whatnot Crafting

Our monthly Witchy Washy & Whatnot Crafting group is a great way to meet other crafters and learn to make all sorts of fun projects, many of which include the use of washi tape!

It may not be the Salem that everyone thinks of at Halloween, but Old Salem has some of its own chilling tales. Old Salem Interpreter Jacob Chilton will share some local legends and the history behind them.
 
This program is appropriate for adults and families with children ages 10 and up.
FCPL Lewisville Branch Reading Contest

Take part our yearlong reading contest for your chance to win a $25 gift card to Bookmarks. The contest has two levels: Beginner and Aficionado. You can choose to read one or both levels. Beginner entries are entered once. Aficionado entries are entered twice, and if both levels are completed, you're entered four times to win. Submit entries by Saturday, Dec. 12. The winner will be announced on Monday, Dec. 14.

Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. 
Multipurpose Room
 
Forsyth County Department of Social Services (DSS) staff members will be on site one day per week to answer residents’ questions, provide information, and help people apply for DSS services including energy programs, food and nutrition assistance, and Medicaid.
DSS will also provide on-site assistance and case follow-up for Forsyth County residents with active DSS cases. 
 
No appointment necessary.

Blood Pressure Stations  

High blood pressure has no symptoms, so know your numbers by checking your blood pressure at the Lewisville Branch Library. Eight Forsyth County Public Library branches including the Lewisville Branch Library have self-monitoring blood pressure stations and health information as part of the American Heart Association's Libraries with Heart program.
