Read to a BARK Therapy Dog Tuesday: May 12, 6:45PM-7:45PM Children's Room Kids 12 and younger, read to a BARK therapy dog. Readers will receive a time slot with a dog on a first come, first served basis. BARK therapy dogs are nonjudgmental listeners and help children who read aloud to them to not only improve their reading skills but also build self confidence. No registration is required. Drop In Gaman Bird Craft Monday: May 18-Saturday: May 23, all day Children's Room Kids ages 3-12, drop in to make a clothespin bird craft inspired by gaman art, objects made by Japanese Americans imprisoned during World War II using whatever materials were available, such as fabric, shells, and paper. Wooden bird pins were a popular craft and expressions of beauty in the incarceration camps. This program is offered to celebrate One Book, One Coast, a multistate community reading program. This year’s shared book is They Called Us Enemy by George Takei, a graphic memoir recounting the author’s experience of incarceration during World War II. Check out a book from the book display near the service desk to learn more about the Japanese American incarceration experience. No registration is required. Caregivers must accompany children 10 years of age and younger for the entirety of this program. Space is limited. While supplies last.

Confronting questions of patriotism, family, loyalty, and community, George’s work is a stunning examination of what it means to be American, both long ago and today. Special guests, Professor Susan Y. Shimazu and Professor Kristine Dennehy of Cal State University, Fullerton will be joining us for this discussion. Zip Books Zip Books is a grant program funded by the California State Library. The program allows our library patrons to request a book that is not already in the library's collection.
The book is shipped directly from Amazon to the patron’s home. When finished, the patron will return the item to the library and the library will add the item to our collection to share with the rest of the community!
Requirements: - Your account must be at least six months old and in good standing with the Buena Park Library.
- You must have an adult patron account.
- The item may be a physical book, large print book, or audiobook on CD.
- You must request a book that is not already owned by the library.
- The cost of the item must be less than $35 for a book, $75 for a CD.
- The book must be available through Amazon Prime.
We do not accept requests for DVDs, textbooks, test prep books, workbooks, on-demand print, activity books, used items, or items from non-US vendors.

All participating libraries will read and discuss They Called Us Enemy by George Takei, Steven Scott, Justin Eisinger and illustrated by Harmony Becker. They Called Us Enemy is a graphic memoir recounting actor/author/activist George Takei’s childhood imprisoned within American concentration camps during World War II. Confronting questions of patriotism, family, loyalty, and community, George’s work is a stunning examination of what it means to be American, both long ago and today.
