Winter Reading Challenge
Monday: Dec. 1 - Saturday: Jan. 3
Children's Room
Kids ages 0-12, read for free kids' meals at Broken Yolk Cafe! Register for the reading challenge on Beanstack (buenapark.beanstack.org or on the free Beanstack app).
 
When you log 5, 10, and 15 books, you will be prompted to pick up a meal certificate at the Library. Kids who cannot yet read may be read to/with.
 
The library thanks Broken Yolk Cafe for their generous sponsorship of this reading challenge.  
Name Charm Drawing
Monday: Dec. 1 - Tuesday: Dec. 30
Children's Room
Kids ages 0-12, stop by the I Spy wall in the Children's Room, and complete this month’s I Spy challenge. Put your entry into the drawing box, and we will randomly draw two entries to win a customized name charm generously donated by Fluffy Market. Find Fluffy Market

Caregivers of very young children may complete the I Spy activity on behalf of their children.

Public Speaking Workshop
Thursday: Dec. 4, 6:30PM-7:30PM
Children's Room
Calling all 1st-6th grade students! Are you interested in practicing public speaking by storytelling? Join us for this interactive workshop led by a passionate, nationally recognized speech and debate high school student.
 
No registration is required. Caregivers must accompany children 10 years of age and younger. 
Drop In Potato Challenge
Saturday: Dec. 6, 1:00PM-3:00PM
Children's Room
Kids ages 3-12, drop in between 1PM-3PM to decorate a potato with the provided craft supplies to make it look like a character from a children’s book (examples: Pete the Cat, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Pigeon). While supplies and potatoes last.
 
Staff will vote on their favorite potatoes. The creators of the top 3 potatoes will win a potato Santa or potato elf plushy. Winners will be contacted on December 15.
 
If you cannot make it to the library during this drop in program, you can decorate a potato using craft supplies you have at home. Drop off your potato at the Children’s Desk on December 8 or 9. All potato submissions will become property of the library.
 
No registration is required. Caregivers must accompany children 10 years of age and younger. 
Photos with Santa
Monday: Dec. 8, 6:30PM-7:30PM
Children's Room
Kids ages 0-12, stop by to take a photo with Santa and Mrs. Claus. A photographer will not be present, and you will need to provide your own camera.
 
Chick-fil-A and the Chick-fil-A cow will also join us and offer chances to win free Chick-fil-A goodies. Meet Santa, listen to him sing, win some free Chick-fil-A, and make a simple holiday craft while you’re here. Santa will leave promptly at 7:30 p.m. to fulfill his other very important Santa duties.

Read to a BARK Therapy Dog
Tuesday: Dec. 9, 6:45PM-7:45PM
Children's Room
Kids 12 and younger, read to a BARK therapy dog. Readers will receive a time slot with a dog on a first come, first served basis. BARK therapy dogs are nonjudgmental listeners and help children who read aloud to them to not only improve their reading skills but also build self confidence.
 
No registration is required. Caregivers must accompany children 10 years of age and younger.   
Pajama-rama Storytime
Thursday: Dec. 11, 6:30PM-7:00PM

Join us in your pajamas for an evening of stories. Stuffed animal friends are more than welcome. Fun for the whole family!

Spend time in our Teen Space!
First-Floor Teen Space
Teens can now enjoy their very own space at the Library! Whether you need a place to study, hang out with friends, make crafts, or just be, please know that there is a free space at the Library reserved just for you.
 
The area is located on the first floor and is reserved for TEENS ONLY (grades 6-12):

Take-Home Craft Kit
Mini Paper Holiday Sweaters

Use the contents of this kit to make your own mini paper sweaters. They are perfect to use as gift tags, ornaments, bookmarks, or decor. You will need your own writing utensil, scissors, and hole punch. 
 
Kits will be available to pick up at our Service Desk or via Curbside Service starting on Tuesday, Dec. 2nd. One per person present, while supplies last.

Gingerbread House Garland

Calling all teens in need of caffeine and a study space! During our community cafe, we have drop in activities available to take short breaks while you study. This drop in will feature gingerbread house garlands, a fun DIY activity to keep your creative vibes up. Snacks and drinks provided!

Holiday Puzzle

First-Floor Teen Space
Make space for connection and much needed study breaks during our community cafe in the Teen Space! Our drop in activity will feature a cozy holiday puzzle that everyone can stop and enjoy. Snacks and drinks will be provided!
 
No registration is required. Ages 12-18 
We will have opportunity drawings at both of this month's Community Cafe meetings for these festive potato plushies! Join us for some fun and festivities!

Zip Books
Zip Books is a grant program funded by the California State Library. The program allows our library patrons to request a book that is not already in the library's collection.

The book is shipped directly from Amazon to the patron’s home. When finished, the patron will return the item to the library and the library will add the item to our collection to share with the rest of the community!

Requirements:
  • Your account must be at least six months old and in good standing with the Buena Park Library.
  • You must have an adult patron account.
  • The item may be a physical book, large print book, or audiobook on CD.
  • You must request a book that is not already owned by the library.
  • The cost of the item must be less than $40 for a book, $75 for a CD.
  • The book must be available through Amazon Prime.
We do not accept requests for DVDs, textbooks, test prep books, workbooks, on-demand print, activity books, used items, or items from non-US vendors.
