| | Unearth a Story with our annual Summer Reading Challenge,
open to all ages!
Library staff will be hosting hundreds of fun, educational, and family-friendly events throughout June and July. Participating is easy and free: simply stop by any branch to sign up and pick up Challenge information. Track your progress throughout June and July.
Complete challenges such as:
Enjoying our selection of books, audiobooks, and magazines
Attending library programs
Visiting Literacy Walks
And much more! When your challenge card is complete, return it to any HCPL branch for a chance to win exciting rewards, including prizes from local businesses!

Hands On! Discovery Center Presents Jr. Paleontology | June 4 | 1:30pm & 3:30pm
Waynesville Branch | Learn about fossils, paleontology, and dinosaurs that roamed current day Appalachia! Get the chance to see and touch real fossils from creatures that are tens of thousands years old to 90 million years old. Participants of this program will get to “dig” for real marine life fossils!

Learn about and sample Colonial-era "cookery" from Amelia Simmons' 1796 cookbook of the same name, the first cookbook to be published in the United States. Presented in observance of America 250 - the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Declaration of Independence.

Mineral Detectives with Asheville Museum of Science | June 24 | 3:00pm-4:00pm
Canton Branch | Can you become a geology detective to help an Educator find the right rock for their project? Solve a real-life problem by exploring minerals, using the Mohs hardness scale, and testing rocks with specialty instruments and acid.
