Six Word Story Contest is Back!
Enter the Library’s 13th annual Six Word Story Contest, March 1 through 31, and you could win a prize and fame! There’s a literary legend that Ernest Hemingway, while having dinner with fellow writers of the famous Algonquin Round Table in New York City, bet he could write a story in just six words. They bet not. He grabbed a pen and a napkin and wrote: “For Sale: baby shoes, never worn.” They paid up and Hemingway called it his best work. Now it’s your turn! A special team of judges will review stories. Winners will be announced during National Library Week, April 19-25.
This contest is for all ages, and each person can submit two stories. Named for famous short story writers, our three prizes are: 1st prize “The Ernest Hemingway”, 2nd prize “The Sandra Cisneros”, and 3rd prize “The James Baldwin”. Full rules in the library and at sherwoodoregon.gov/library.

Celebrate Women Authors and Stories
Girls on the Rise by Amanda Gorman
Girls on the Rise
by Amanda Gorman

Who are we? We are a billion voices, bright and brave; we are light, standing together in the fight. Girls are strong and powerful alone, but even stronger when they work to uplift one another. In this galvanizing original poem by presidential inaugural poet Amanda Gorman, girls and girlhood are celebrated in their many forms, all beautiful, not for how they look but for how they look into the face of fear.
