February with hearts

Welcome to February @ MLPL

Winter may still have a grip on The Township, but February is packed with ways to stay connected, creative, and cozy at MLPL.

From Love Your Library Month celebrations and family-friendly programs, to creative workshops in our Makerspace, Olympic watch parties, and community gatherings, there’s lots happening in both Port Carling and Bala this month!

And don’t forget about everything your library card unlocks beyond programs, books and DVDs!

Our Home Delivery Service is here if getting out is tricky, our Library of Things includes items like daylight lamps to help beat the winter doldrums, and you can borrow provincial parks passes for your next outdoor adventure.

Plus… snowshoes are coming later this month to the Library of Things lineup — stay tuned!

Whether you’re popping in for a quick visit or settling in for an afternoon, February is a great time to rediscover all the reasons you love your library.

It's Love Your Library Month!

It's not a question of willpower. Obesity is a disease. Dr. Jastreboff's groundbreaking research offers a new way forward, not only for obesity treatment, but also for overall health, with significant implications for the prevention and reversal of hundreds of related diseases. As she demonstrates in this book, when science meets empathy, real healing becomes possible. Yes, there is a path to healing and leading the life you have always wanted, when your brain is reassured that you have "enough."

Wow, that's one bad banana. Look at it--it's soft. It's squishy. Its yellow peel has lots of spots! Could there be hope for a banana like that?

Find out what to do with a banana gone bad in this hilarious Level 2 Ready-to-Read from bestselling author-illustrator Michael Rex.

Gumshoe: A Graphic Novel by Brenna Thummler

(Juvenile graphic novel)

When eleven-year-old mail-enthusiast and prospective mail carrier Willa is mistaken for being the notorious Two Gum Tilly, mail bandit at large, she must clear her name and bring the real crook to justice... with the help of the Gumshoe Gang, a group of runaways looking to right the wrongs of the letter-looting thief.

Each month we will include a title or two that a staff member has recently read. Yes, we could call it Staff Picks, but where's the alliterative fun in that?

So, without further ado, please enjoy Rachel's Reading Room!

Split Tooth by Tanya Tagaq

Split Tooth

by Tanya Tagaq

(Adult fiction book)

Based in part on the author's personal journals, Split Tooth tells the story of a young girl growing up in Nunavut in the 1970s. Tagaq explores the transition from childhood to motherhood in a way that is equal parts raw and beautiful. The writing style is a unique blend of poetry and fiction, which quickly drew me in. Audiobook listeners will enjoy the author’s traditional Inuk throat singing.

Hear that? Sounds like spring!

The Muskoka Lakes Children’s Choir is returning, and registrations will open in March. Save the date! Choir rehearsals will take place Tuesdays from 4:45–6:00 p.m., beginning March 31, with a joyful final performance at the library on Friday, May 29.

Stay tuned to next month’s newsletter for registration details and more information—we can’t wait to hear those voices fill the library again!
