What's New @MLPL

Place a hold on any of these titles by logging in to your MLPL account, or by asking any staff member.

Landman Season 1

(DVD)

Set in the proverbial boomtowns of West Texas, Landman is a modern-day tale of fortune-seeking in the world of oil rigs. The series is an upstairs/downstairs story of roughnecks and wildcat billionaires fueling a boom so big, it's reshaping our climate, our economy, and our geopolitics.

Is a River Alive?

by Robert Macfarlane

(Adult non-fiction book)

Is a River Alive? explores the transformative idea that rivers are living beings, deserving recognition in both imagination and law. Macfarlane takes readers on a global journey through history and activism, highlighting a growing movement to protect rivers’ rights and renew our connection with these vital, endangered waters.

Don't Look Back, You'll Trip Over

by Michael Caine

(Adult non-fiction book)

In conversation with writer and friend Matthew D'Ancona, Michael Caine looks back over his life, the good times and the bad, the setbacks he's learned from, the people who've inspired him, and what, at the foundation of it all, has meant the most to him, and what he hopes his legacy will be.

Shy Creatures: a novel

by Clare Chambers

(Adult fiction book)

Croydon, 1964: Helen Hansford, an unmarried art therapist in her thirties, works at Westbury Park psychiatric hospital and is entangled in an affair with a married doctor. When police discover a mute man, William Tapping, living in isolation with his dying aunt in a crumbling Victorian house, Helen is drawn into his mystery. As William, a gifted but hidden artist, becomes her project, Helen’s own life of secrets starts to come apart.

The Mystery of the Haunted Dance Hall

by Charis Cotter

(Juvenile novel)

Bee is spending the summer at Camp Blue Heron while her mom teaches a course. She struggles to make friends—until she meets Zippy, who shares a strange mystery: the girls in the Hawks cabin get fresh batteries each night, but by morning they’re drained, and the girls are exhausted. Add eerie music and a mysterious boy only Bee can see, and the camp turns downright spooky.

the OK book

by Amy Krouse Rosenthal

(Juvenile picture book)

In this clever and literal play on words, OK is turned upside down, on it's side, and right side up to show that being OK can really be quite great.

Each month we will include a title or two that a staff member has recently read. Yes, we could call it Staff Picks, but where's the alliterative fun in that?

So, without further ado, please enjoy Andrew's Author Anecdotes!

The Lifespan of a Fact

by Jim Fingal

(Adult non-fiction book)

Is it fact, fiction—or something fuzzier in between? The Lifespan of a Fact is a whip-smart, often hilarious tug-of-war between an essayist (John D’Agata) and his fact-checker (Jim Fingal). What starts as a simple magazine piece spirals into a philosophical debate about truth, storytelling, and journalistic integrity. With sharp banter, footnotes that turn into feuds, and questions that make you rethink everything, this book is as thought-provoking as it is entertaining. A must-read for writers, skeptics, and anyone who loves a good intellectual spar.

Cleaner

2025 1hr 37m - via Kanopy

At a high-profile corporate gala, a heavily-armed group of terrorists take control of 300 hostages. Unbeknownst to them, a lone window cleaner witnesses the crime-in-progress, and, as it turns out, she's an ex-soldier, skilled in hand-to-hand combat and firearms.
