by Mats Sundin(Adult non-fiction book)
In one of the last great remaining untold stories in all of sports, the Hall of Fame Toronto Maple Leafs captain Mats Sundin shares for the first time an unfiltered look at playing hockey in Sweden and across North America as part of the sport’s most fabled franchises. In Home and Away, Mats Sundin writes openly for the first time about what it was like for him to uproot his life in Sweden to embark on a long hockey career an ocean away. Home and Away is an elegiac, heartfelt, and honest story of a man who followed his passions, cherished his family, faced heavy scrutiny, and ultimately earned his way into both the hearts of fans and the hockey record books. His journey transcends the rink and shows what it means to be a quiet and unpretentious Swedish kid who went on to become one of the most accomplished players in the history of the game.

by Jeffery Deaver and Isabella Maldonado(Adult fiction book)
Carmen Sanchez is a tough Homeland Security agent who plays by the rules. But when her sister is attacked, revealing a connection to a series of murders across Southern California, she realizes a conventional investigation will not be enough to stop the ruthless perpetrator. With nowhere else to turn, Sanchez enlists the aid of Professor Jake Heron, a brilliant and quirky private security expert who, unlike Sanchez, believes rules are merely suggestions.
Over the next seventy-two hours, Sanchez and Heron find themselves in the midst of a lethal chess match with the killer as they race to stop the carnage. As the victims mount, so do the risks. Because this spider’s web of intrigue is more sinister—and goes far deeper—than anyone could possibly anticipate. |

Support MLPL on Giving Tuesday
The Muskoka Lakes Public Library system is more than just a place to check out books; it’s a place to engage, evolve and explore. Our success is rooted in the generosity and commitment of our community partners and library members. Your support provides the sustainability, flexibility, and versatility for our exceptional library programs and diverse collection offerings!
If you are able, and wish to financially support the MLPL in all that we do, there are a variety of ways in which to do so:
- Stop by the Port Carling or Bala branch in person and pick-up a newly restocked Library Tote bag! A perfect gift for the holidays for only $25!
- Or, if you need a stocking stuffer, pick-up one of our newly printed “vintage” Muskoka Lakes Postcards. $1.50 each or 5 for $5.00!
- Make a $100 donation to our Library Giving Tree and a symbolized gold leaf will be hung from it (with your name, or a name of your choice, displayed on our digital donor roll)
- You can donate online, anytime, directly to the library using canadahelps.org
- Keep an eye out for the Friends of the Muskoka Lakes Public Library silent auction in Summer 2025
Libraries have the power to change lives. This year we’ve seen and heard countless stories of how the MLPL has brought people together and empowered individuals through access to resources and community engagement. But we can’t do it without your help.

- Bring a friend and attend our programs!
Your presence in the branch, or online, truly is the best present.

by Bonnie Garmus
This novel had been on my radar for a while, after seeing it make many people’s Must Read lists, and from anecdotal reports from patrons when they returned it to the library. I approach books with this much hype with a bit of caution, as they often are so built up by that point that they can fall a bit flat. Fortunately, that was not the case with this one! I quite enjoyed reading about Elizabeth Zott, and her efforts to be seen and recognized as a chemist in her own right. This book takes place in the early 1960s and so has all of the expected stereotypes and tropes worked into it. What the author does really well, however, is give Zott a voice that is delightfully acerbic, while also managing to be funny. Elizabeth Zott is undoubtedly a brilliant woman, but she is born into a world where only men can be scientists, only men can be smart enough to have authored papers, and only men can change the world through their research. Through a variety of twists of fate, and truly harrowing encounters with those in positions of power, she finds a way to have her voice heard and becomes a rallying point for other women of her time. I liked the way that Bonnie Garmus was able to deal with themes of sexism and trauma, in a way that felt both authentic and respectful. This is a fun, quick read, that I found mostly enjoyable, and I can see what the hype is about!

created by Marjane Satrapi
This is a challenging collection of graphic story-telling, centred around the current (as of 2022) state of political and social unrest in Iran. The book uses a variety of voices and artists to explore and explain the history behind the uprising that was noticed around the world, when a young Iranian student, Mahsa Amini, was arrested, and ultimately killed, by the morality police of Iran, for improperly wearing her headscarf. I found the information very heavy, and yet at times rather hopeful. Being able to experience it through the different artists and authors broke it up into disparate parts that were more accessible for me to process. I didn't enjoy the storytelling style of all of the contributors, but overall learned a great deal about the history of a country and its people and would recommend this book to others who may wish to dive deeper than the headlines we see in the news. Through the interwoven short essays outlining the history of the revolution, it is remarkable to bear witness to the horrors that have been committed against those who speak up and speak out. The very act of participating in this work makes the contributors targets of the regime, and yet, they persevere. This was uncomfortable reading, but because of the format I was able to get through all 268 pages in a relatively short timeframe, and feel that it was time well spent.
