by Nicole Wong(Adult non-fiction book)
Whether you are looking to reconnect with the game, pick up a new hobby, or introduce others to a favourite pastime, Mahjong is a step-by-step guide for new and seasoned players alike. With vibrant photography and detailed instructional diagrams, author Nicole Wong walks you through gameplay, just how her grandfather would have. In addition, Mahjong delves into the strategy, history, and design of the game and discusses various popular styles of play (American mah-jongg, Japanese riichi mahjong, and more). Snippets of the author's family history are sprinkled throughout, telling a story of diaspora through mahjong and showcasing mahjong culture, past and present. With Mahjong as your guide, learn the history and evolution of this beautiful game while you connect with friends, family, and culture. You may even write your own house rules--just don't forget the snacks!
*Interested in playing? Every Thursday there is a group of Mah Jongg players who meet at our Port Carling branch from 1-3. Find out more on our Programs Page. |

by Mark Synnott(Adult non-fiction book)
New York Times bestselling author Mark Synnott has climbed with Alex Honnold. He's scaled Mt. Everest. But in 2022, he realized there was a dream he'd never realized -- to sail the Northwest Passage in his own boat, a feat only four hundred or so sailors had ever accomplished -- and in doing so, try to solve the mystery of what happened to legendary nineteenth-century explorer Sir John Franklin and his ships, HMS Erebus and Terror. In Into the Ice, Synnott races against time and horrific storms to investigate legends, and in the end, try to find the answer to why any of us would risk it all in the name of exploration.

by Holly Kennedy(Adult fiction book)
On the surface, Denny Voss's life in rural Minnesota is a quiet one. At thirty years old, he lives at home with his elderly mother and his beloved blind and deaf Saint Bernard, George. He cleans up roadkill to help pay the bills. Though his prospects are limited by a developmental delay--the result of an accident at birth--Denny has always felt that he has "a good life." So how did he wind up being charged with the murder of a mayoral candidate--after crashing a sled full of guns into a tree? As Denny awaits trial, his court-appointed therapist walks him through the events of the past year. Denny's had other scuffles with the law, the first for kidnapping a neighbor's cantankerous goose. And then there was the time he accidentally assisted in a bank robbery. It seems like whenever Denny tries to do the right thing, chaos ensues. Untangling the events around the murder reveals even more painful truths about his family's past. He's always been surrounded by people who love him, but now it's up to Denny to set his life on a new course.

So, without further ado, please enjoy Maggie's Memorable Mentions |

by Michael Crichton(Adult fiction book)
An oldie, but a goodie. My family loves these movies, and I knew that Jurassic Park was a book before it was made into a film, so it’s been on my radar for quite some time. Generally, I try to read books before I watch the movie/TV show adaptation. I decided to finally cross this one off my never-ending To Be Read list. I’m glad I did! The plot was totally recognizable as the film version, but it was also different, which kept it interesting and exciting. There were several characters who had far different fates than in the movie. I won’t tell you who though….for that, you will need to read the book.

Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents
by Isabel Wilkerson (Adult non-fiction book)
An MLPL Book Club selection for 2025, this non-fiction pick is quite timely. I am an admirer of Wilkerson’s writing style, and I am not surprised that she has won the Pulitzer Prize for Journalism. This book covers a very heavy topic, but is told in a way that is approachable, clear, and interesting. Lots of things she says throughout will make you pause and reflect. No shortage of points to discuss here! |
