Ontario Public Library Week — Libraries for Life

Libraries aren’t just for books — they’re for life.

From your very first story time to discovering new hobbies in retirement, your local library is with you every step of the way.

During Ontario Public Library Week (October 19–25), we celebrate the stories, support, and opportunities libraries provide at every stage of life. Whether it’s digital literacy programs, book clubs, computer access, or simply a quiet place to reflect — libraries evolve as we do.

Stop by either branch all week long to enjoy special OPLW activities and discover all the ways your library is there for life!

OPLW Special Event: Pages from the Past, Paths to the Future

Thursday, October 23 | 6:00–7:00 PM | Port Carling Branch - Please Register

For over 138 years, some version of what we now know as the Muskoka Lakes Public Library has been more than just a place for books—it has served as a keeper of local memory, a hub of learning, and a reflection of community life.

Join MLPL Chief Librarian Andrew Whitfield for an engaging journey through the early days of libraries and librarianship in Muskoka Lakes, a look ahead at MLPL in the digital age, and a thoughtful discussion on the vital role public libraries continue to play as stewards of history, agents of change, and spaces of belonging.

Jurassic World. Rebirth

(DVD)

Five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion, the planet's ecology has proven largely inhospitable to dinosaurs. Those remaining exist in isolated equatorial environments with climates resembling the one in which they once thrived. The three most colossal creatures within that tropical biosphere hold the key to a drug that will bring miraculous life-saving benefits to humankind.

Bread etc.

by Matthew James Duffy

(Adult non-fiction book)

'Bread Etc.' is an accessible guide to all things bread - from sourdough to yeasted dough, pizza dough and more. It distills the complex art of mixing, shaping, and baking dough into clear explanations and easy-to-read instructions. You’ll begin with an overview of bread baking that breaks down every dough mystery, followed by recipes geared to both novice and advanced bakers.

The Secret of Secrets

by Dan Brown

(Adult fiction book)

In a thrilling race through the dual worlds of futuristic science and mystical lore, Robert Langdon uncovers a shocking truth about a secret project that will forever change the way we think about the human mind.

What We Can Know

by Ian McEwan

(Adult fiction book)

One hundred years in the future, much of the western world has been submerged by rising seas following a nuclear accident. Thomas Metcalfe, a scholar and researcher, longs for the early 21st century as he chases the ghost of a poem written in 2014. When he stumbles across a clue that may lead to the poem’s discovery, a story is revealed of entangled loves and a brutal crime that destroy his assumptions about people he thought he knew intimately well.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar's Peekaboo Halloween

by Eric Carle

(Juvenile board book)

Celebrate Halloween with search-and-find fun in this pumpkin-shaped board book perfect for fans of The Very Hungry Caterpillar!

Absolute Superman, Volume 1, Last Dust of Krypton

by Jason Aaron

(Young adult graphic novel)

In a different, darker world, Kal-El landed in a remote Kansas field, the last survivor from an alien planet ... but even before that moment, nothing unfolded as you'd expect. As he tries to survive in a world seemingly determined to repeat the mistakes of the demolished Krypton, he'll come into conflict with the globe-straddling Lazarus Corporation and its agenda of exploitation ... and go fist-to-fist with its brutal army of Peacemakers!

Each month we will include a title or two that a staff member has recently read. Yes, we could call it Staff Picks, but where's the alliterative fun in that?

So, without further ado, please enjoy Maggie's Memorable Mentions!

What Have You Done?

by Shair Lapena

(Adult fiction book)

A Canadian author, Lapena has a knack for the domestic dramas and small-town secrets I find irresistible in a suspense novel. This is her newest book, and it was very hard for me to put down. Told from multiple perspectives, there is no shortage of suspects. I had my eye on three individuals but totally missed the true villain! The reveal at the end caught me. Perhaps you would be better at guessing whodunnit?

Halloween Party Décor

1hr 15 minutes - via Creativebug

This class is jam-packed with six different Halloween craft projects that range from gothic and bookish to add a slightly sinister note to an adult cocktail party to paper decorations and Halloween surprise balls that will enliven any kids’ party. Use these ideas as a jumping-off point to customize your own Halloween decorations.
