Reagan

(DVD + Bluray)

From dusty small-town roots, to the glitter of Hollywood, and then on to commanding the world stage, REAGAN is a cinematic journey of overcoming the odds. Told through the voice of Viktor Petrovich, a former KGB agent whose life becomes inextricably linked with Ronald Reagan's when Reagan first caught the Soviets' attention as an actor in Hollywood, this film offers a perspective as unique as it is captivating. Dennis Quaid brings to life a story that transcends the boundaries of a traditional biopic, offering a profound exploration of the enduring impact of the power of one man who overcame the odds, sustained by the love of a woman who supported him in his journey.

Squiggly Lines is a full-colour book about map and compass navigation with a focus on adventure racing. The Blue Bowl

by Flo Leung

(Juvenile picture book)

A young boy realizes, thanks to his family, that he can enjoy both his Chinese and North American cultures through his favourite dishes. Based on the author’s own experiences growing up, 'The Blue Bowl' will speak to many children and adults alike with similar experiences and bring a new perspective to those who do not share in this experience.

Buzz!

by Ananth Hirsh

(Young adult graphic novel)

Webster's first day of school goes off the rails when he ends up at a back-alley rumble ... FOR UNDERGROUND SPELLING!? He's nicknamed the Golden Kid, and from that moment on he's drawn into the world of underground spelling bees, where letters fly like shurikens and defeat is never an option. His talent is recognized by the mysterious and dashing Outlaw King, Khan, and the suave and plucky Black Queen, Bonnie, and they introduce to him the new challenge of no-holds-barred competitive spelling.

Blood Ties

by Jo Nesbø

(Adult fiction book)

The modern master of Nordic noir is back with an explosive novel about two brothers who, on the verge of losing everything, are willing to do anything to stop that from happening.

Blood Ties is a tense, compulsively readable tour de force about loyalty, family ties and love that is as destructive as it is powerful.

Each month we will include a title or two that a staff member has recently read. Yes, we could call it Staff Picks, but where's the alliterative fun in that?

So, without further ado, please enjoy a guest post featuring

Painting Pastel Landscapes

by Jeremy Ford

(Adult Non-Fiction Book)

This one is for the art enthusiasts!

Whether you are a practiced artist, a beginner, or are ready to approach the painting experience for the first time, I recommend you give soft pastels a try. It’s my favourite medium to work with as it combines colouring and drawing in its purest form. Painting with soft, chalk pastels, offers the artist a discipline in drawing and blending colours that is unmatched by any other medium.

Painting Pastel Landscapes offers the familiar, step-by-step format common in many how-to books, but as a pastel artist, I recognize the images to be accurate and informative on specific techniques that I find will be very useful for the beginner pastelist. The artist’s diagrams are clear and easy to follow with less text to read, ideal for the visual learner. 😉

The landscapes in this book are beautiful. The artist has captured the time of day and the change of seasons using striking colours with a variety of useful techniques. He expertly, demonstrates the flexibility of this medium, capable of producing images that are both detailed and impressionistic.

Don’t be intimidated by the completed artwork. Though the author/artist clearly demonstrates the various techniques, the images (as always) are offered as a guide for you to produce your own unique landscapes. As with all art instructional books, the learning is in the practicing of the techniques used.

And they aren’t as messy to work with as you might think!

Visit our non-fiction section for additional books on pastel painting. I guarantee you will be inspired!

by Nancy Gray Ogle

(Soft Pastel painting)

Pastels are very portable - easy to bring along for sketching outdoors. The medium is ideal for capturing colours, lights and shadows quickly. This painting is the result of a sketching trip.

How to Fold an Origami Heart

by Creativebug

Looking for something simple and fun to do?  Why not try following along to this Creativebug class?  It's less than 5 minutes long, doesn't require anything other than paper, and was 'easy and fun' for staff who recently gave it a go!
