Message from the Manager Dear Library Community, September is always a fun and busy month with fall coming, back-to-school, Labor Day, and lots of activity here at the Library. First up is National Library Card Sign-up Month and we will have a goody bag for all children who sign up for cards from September 6-30. September also includes Banned Books Week, a celebration of the free and open access to books and information. Look for displays and more information at your local branch. We will also be celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs September 15-October 15, National Literacy Month, and welcoming back programming associated with our Veterans Resource Center which has been on hiatus since the pandemic. As I said, a fun and busy month with a lot to celebrate and ways to engage with the community and the Library. As always, events are listed on our calendar and we welcome you to join us for a program, or come in to read a book or access information, or just to enjoy a cool spot to relax. See you soon! September is National Hispanic Heritage Month Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15 by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. HBPL encourages you to learn more about the incredibly diverse cultures of the Hispanic community by reading a book by a Hispanic/Latinx author! Click the icons above to find our recommendations by age group, or visit your nearest HBPL branch and have a librarian help you find something fresh and new!

We'll have a real school bus parked in front of the library for kiddos to explore from 9am to 12pm. Join us for Digital Saturday on September 24! Did you know that the Huntington Beach Public Library provides a growing collection of digital resources that can be accessed online via your computer, tablet, and phone at any time of the day? To make these resources more easily findable and accessible to our cardholders, we launched a newly-designed website to replace our Your Library @ Home page. All of the resources listed on our new Digital Resources Library site contain descriptions and directions on how to access. Best of all, these resources are 100% free to Huntington Beach Public library cardholders. To learn more, please visit (and bookmark): https://hbpl.libguides.com/digital-resources-library/home. For an in-depth introduction to these resources and more, join us at Digital Day on Saturday, September 24 from 10 AM to noon in the Talbert Room at Central Library. We'll have staff on hand to present tips and tricks for getting the most out of your library card. Bring your tablet or other mobile device to get help accessing ebooks, streaming media, and other digital resources. Tables will be set up with information and presentations will be short and full of information, so feel free to drop by at any time. September is a new start for many people - so why not use that as an excuse to schedule a Makerspace appointment? You can learn how to sew using our industrial sewing machine or embroidery machine. Add creative touches to your totes and tees with the Cricut. Explore engraving with the Glowforge laser engraver or create your own models on the 3D printer. Makerspace equipment is always free.
