Summary
Summary
In December 2015, the Smithsonian called on rock and roll lovers around the world to collect photos and stories of their favorite moments in music. Fans dug through attics, basements, closets, shoeboxes, digital cameras, and photo albums to post great rock shots to rockandroll.si.edu. From Woodstock to the Whisky a Go Go, from Lollapalooza to the 9-30 Club, and all the rockin' places in between, fans overwhelmingly responded with their favorite rock and roll moments. Iconic artists ranging from the Who to Nirvana to Chuck Berry to the Jimi Hendrix and many more are celebrated here. There are early photographs of everyone from Run-D.M.C. to the Runaways, and contemporary shots of some of the biggest names in music, including Bruce Springsteen, the Rolling Stones, and Metallica. Presented together, these photographs create a kaleidoscopic history of the artists, the musical styles, the venues, the concerts, and the fans. This is rock and roll as it has never been seen before.

Booklist Review
In 2015, Smithsonian Books, an imprint of the venerable national institution, launched a website requesting that rock fans submit photographs that they took of their favorite artists and performers. Of the thousands of submissions, around 300 photos were selected and are here presented as an index of supreme influence, which emphasizes importance over popularity and encompasses the history of rock 'n' roll, from Elvis to the Alabama Shakes, creating a canon of rock. And while the canon is always evolving, it is universally agreed that the Beatles, Bob Dylan, and the Rolling Stones should be included as well as Chuck Berry, the Velvet Underground, James Brown, and Bob Marley. Of course a collection like this will provoke debate. Some interesting inclusions are Laura Nyro, Nick Drake, and Alejandro Escovedo. Some will question the presence of the J. Geils Band and KISS while the Faces, Big Star, and Public Enemy are nowhere to be seen. Despite omissions, this large-format book is eminently browsable and will prompt readers to dig out their old records or stream their favorites songs.--Segedin, Ben Copyright 2017 Booklist
Library Journal Review
Oversized rock pictorials are nothing new, but Smithsonian Books have produced a winner by taking a fan-led approach to creating this latest work. Instead of rehashing the same archived photos seen in other similar titles, the Smithsonian has used crowdsourced photos collected through their website. These images, all laid out beautifully and profiling more than 140 performers, are accompanied by short biographies about the artists and their music. The list includes the obvious choices (e.g., the Beatles, U2), but the inclusion of contributors such as Doug Sahm and Alejandro Escovedo also shows that the editors have made an effort to introduce fans to artists about whom they may be less informed. The biographies aren't comprehensive, but that's not really the point. This book is about the photos, which are plentiful and outstanding, especially those from early shows or that capture their subjects offstage. VERDICT An excellent work that should have wide appeal for all music fans.-Craig L. Shufelt, Fort Erie P.L., Ont. © Copyright 2017.
