Library Journal Review

Jasminda's mixed heritage and magical gift of Earthsong make her an outcast in her small village at the border of her homeland of Elsira. When she discovers and heals a wounded spy named Jack near her isolated home, she learns that the magical Mantle that protects Elsira from its imperialistic neighbor Lagrimar is on the verge of collapse, threatening to reignite a centuries-old war. The two young protagonists must evade capture, uncover buried secrets from the origins of the ancient conflict, and navigate treacherous politics at the highest levels of the Elsiran government to find a way to prevent all-out war and protect their nation from conquest at the hands of Lagrimar's immortal king, the True Father. Penelope blends the personal with the mythic in this novel; its unusual setting transcends swords-and-elves fantasy tropes, and the star-crossed romance adds a human thread to the high-stakes war story. Allyson Johnson's narration is crisp, clear, and lively; Johnson does a fine job with Penelope's cast of characters, ranging from war refugees to nobility. VERDICT Recommended for listeners who want a blend of romance and epic fantasy; readers of Leigh Bardugo, Max Gladstone, or Jim Butcher may appreciate the nontraditional fantasy setting.-Jason Puckett, Georgia State Univ. Booklist Review

Born with her father's Lagrimari skin and magical Earthsong, Jasminda endures prejudice in her mother's homeland, pale Elsira, not knowing where she truly belongs. However, after she heals Jack, an Elsiran soldier, she joins his cause: to prevent an Elsiran-Lagrimari war, they must reinforce the Mantle that divides the two lands. During this quest, Jasminda learns more about her magic, people, and religion while falling for Jack, who struggles to adjust to his new role as an Elsiran leader. Penelope (Angelborn, 2015) parallels our own world, exploring a refugee crisis and race relations with emotion and nuance. She vividly describes Earthsong in lush, grounded prose be it Jasminda's healing powers while knitting flesh over a wound or her ability to sense the sickly doom of blood magic. Readers who enjoy romance mixed with fantasy will find a bold power couple to root for as Jasminda and Jack overcome both personal and political obstacles. Fresh, suspenseful, and perceptive, Penelope's first in a new series will appeal to historical-fantasy readers, especially fans of N. K. Jemisin's The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms (2010).--Hyzy, Biz Copyright 2018 Booklist
